'Absolver' Is a New Approach to Fighting Games in a Genre Desperate For It

i’ve been playing a lot of fighters lately and i can say that Absolver definitely fits into my personal definition of a fighting game. same with Nidhogg 2. they kind of prioritize the same kind of interactions and mindgames, and have that serious focus on learning the systems and expressing yourself in them.

the fighting genre’s also been expanding a lot, especially if you look outside the 1v1 2D fighters and to arena style fighters like Gundam Vs, Dissidia, Gunslinger Stratos and Magician’s Dead, which have all been gaining a lot of popularity in Japan. There’s even stuff like School of Ragnarok that has huge customization aspects to it.

I don’t think so. Pepe has brown lips, does not have eyelashes, and I can’t find any evidence for ribbons or drool or anything like that. Other than that, frogs are generally green. Unless all references to frogs mean people agree with the alt-right. I guess what I’m trying to say, until there is some other evidence of wrong doing #notallfrogs.

Vulpes, how bummed would you be if foxes as a concept got taken over by an ideology you oppose? I would be super bummed, as foxes are rad.

They almost did! The Nazis made an animated propaganda film based on the Reynard stories that never actually made it in to theaters, though I hear here are versions out there to be viewed now. Supposedly Disney’s Robin Hood move was going to be based on Reynard but A: Reynard is a horrible asshole who nowadays wouldn’t pass in all but the most try hard edge lord nonsense and B: Nazis. So no I wouldn’t happy but nor would it be the first time

As for this game in particular it’s not the frog thing by itself it’s the ribbons that are nearly gamegate colors on top of it. I’ll give the benefit of the doubt here since no one else seems to think it’s related but I wanted to at least see what others thought

Most items in the game have a couple different color variances. I don’t know if that’s the case with the frog mask. If it’s a unique item probably not though. Might be worth looking at the item description. If I come across the mask I’ll report back.

Related, as someone who loved the frog emoji years ago, I’m constantly upset it’s been tarnished by fascists.

All the wiki says about it is: “Druids in the forest enjoyed taking inspiration from animals. In this case, a frog”

Hmm, given that I don’t know if it’s related. Completely understand the concern though, given the nature of dog whistles and the like. Here’s to foxes not being tarnished!

Frogs are popular Martial Arts symbolism, alongside the more well-known ones like tigers and bears and the like. Absolved being as nerdy as it is about that kind of stuff I’m not surprised there’s frog imagery to be found. I’m still hanging around building up my moves knowledge right now, but hopefully there’s some bullfrog style moves in there to pair with the mask.

I went ahead and picked it up on the assumption it’s just an unfortunate coincidence… Though I’m not exactly short on souls likes to play…

Goes to show you learn something new everyday, thanks for the insight!

Now, a crane mask would be right up my alley!

Fox mask or bust! :stuck_out_tongue:

I have a confession to make…about 80% of the reason why I bought this game is because I collect masks & have had to force myself to stop buying any more because I no longer (and never had) any room to hang them all. Now I can keep expanding my collection!

This game is an interesting twist on a few conventional fighting game mechanics. There is no directional high/low blocking, no throws or unblockables, however blocking costs significantly more stamina than attacking and you can chain together probably two dozen consecutive attacks before your stamina runs out. When the stamina bar is empty you’re guard broken which gives your enemy time for 1-3 free hits depending on how fast the attacks are.

This means that on the defensive you’re trying to pick out the pattern of their attacks in order to find a place to apply your defensive abilities like parries or dodges, or you can also use a range of moves designed to beat specific other kinds of moves, such as a uppercut that starts by ducking or a jumping kick to go over their low attack. Then you have the advantage and can press your own string of attacks.

As the attacker you have the ability to build strings of attacks on your main attack button, but also have a set of moves on your alternate attack button that you can use instead. So your job is to build out a set of moves designed to whittle down their stamina bar, break their guard and then land a big hit while they’re vulnerable. At the same time you also need to build in traps to trick your opponents into using the wrong defensive move and taking hits and prevent them from stealing the momentum away from you.

It’s a very interesting system. I’ll be curious to see what competitive play ends up looking like.
