Anyone want to talk about Tomb Raider?

The trailer for the new Tomb Raider film just debuted and I think it looks pretty good.

What are your favorite games/memories in the series?

For me personally, I’ll never forget the first time I played Tomb Raider in 1998. The opening cinematic to that game totally blew 8-year-old me away. It’s a total cheese-fest now but to me, Lara Croft was like Indiana Jones but cooler because she had sunglasses and could shoot two guns while back-flipping.
Playing through the first game I was totally enthralled in the adventure and in the character. I ultimately got stuck and never finished the first game until I was a teenager but I’ll always remember those puzzles, the enemies and the mythology that the first Tomb Raider used so effectively.
I’ve played through a majority of the old games and I really love the two most recent games even though Lara doesn’t wear sunglasses anymore or shoot guns while back-flipping.

What about you? How do you feel about Tomb Raider and Lara Croft?

What concerns me is lack of other female characters in this movie, even in comparison to the first reboot game. I get that movie is shorter than game, and there are not enough time to develop many characters, but it’s seems like bad trend: we get movies with female leads, which is cool, but only if they are smurfettes.

Other than that, seems pretty good so far.

Same. I DUG the hell out of the Tomb Raider reboot, and the lack of Sam in the trailers is worrisome, especially with the emphasis on Lara’s dad. Hope our gut feelings about smurfette syndrome are wrong.

That being said, the last two TR games are great, and that’s not something I could say about the franchise since like TR2.

Oh, right, games. Played both reboot games, loved it. I mean, yes, there was this torture porn aspect to some scenes, and story and gameplay were clashing at times, timed exclusivity was kinda dumb, too, but overall they were pretty great.

It captured the same feels as playing the game: danger, excitement, exploration.

But unlike the game it has Walton Goggins! So that’s cool.
