Assuming 'Rage 2' Is Real, What Unexpected Sequel Would You Dream Up Next?

If a series of listings by Walmart Canada are to be believed, Rage 2 is coming. Rage 2? Rage 2! A sequel to id Software’s weird open world game, which had a great shotgun and lots of promise, but mostly didn’t deliver? I guess! But the way Bethesda has winked at what’s going on suggests maybe we should actually take Rage 2 seriously.

So, okay. I liked Rage more than most, but couldn’t tell you anything about what happened in the game, beyond the shotgun. I have no idea what Rage 2 would look like, other than being a shooter set in the wasteland, but maybe this is a Prey 2 situation.

Wait, that game was cancelled…

Bethesda has a solid track record of resurrecting its dead franchises. Among Doom, Prey, and Wolfenstein, I’m reluctant to call bullshit on their gambles.

That said, it got me wondering about other weird franchises that could/should get a surprise sequel, long after people had moved on. I’m not talking reboots, which means Doom, Prey, and Wolfenstein don’t count. There’s something specific, funny, and bold about coming out with a game called Rage 2, instead of naming it something else.

In another timeline, I would have said, Spelunky 2, but hell, we’re actually getting that. Alan Wake 2 scratches a certain itch, but that one feels kinda plausible. Part of what I’m looking for here are games that render a “Wait, what?” reaction from people.

Bully 2 is tempting, but given all the rumors over the years, it doesn’t count.

Dragon’s Dogma 2? Hell yes, but again, too plausible.

Chrono Trigger 2—with an actual “2”—would legitimately take my breath away in the same way people lost their marbles over the news about a Final Fantasy VII remake.

Okay, okay, I know the game I implausibly want: Prince of Persia 2. Specifically, a sequel to the 2008 version of Prince of Persia, the one with that sofuckinggood art style. I’m still mad we never got a sequel, given the way it ends. And while the platforming was “easy,” whatever. It looked and played like something out of a dream, and I miss it.

If the world can have Rage 2, give me Prince of Persia 2, you cowards.

Cobra Club 2: Hog In The City

Red Steel 3

Prince of Persia 2

Rayman Arena 2

Give the people what they want Yves.

Dunno about any of you, but I am unironically ready for a new Syphon Filter.

Give me Summoner 3 or give me death.

Final Fantasy Tactics 2

Not Advance, not A2 Grimoire of the Rift or whatever, not some other FF game technically set in a place called Ivalice but with the flimsiest, most inconsequential connections to the original, but Final Fantasy Tactics ass Final Fantasy Tactics 2.

What would or should that be? I don’t know. But I want it.

Jak X 2…Look…I know…

And Alpha Protocol!!! Come on!

I thought Alan Wake’s American Nightmare was a direct sequel, given that it picked up where the first one ended… even if it was tonally shifted more slapstick than tongue-in-cheek.

As for unlikely sequels I really want, Zeno Clash 2 is one of my favourite games of all time, and I would love to see a third, but I’m unsure if that counts for this question. Maybe a sequel to hackmud just to see what kind of things could/would be added. Or a sequel to The Sexy Brutale because I really enjoyed the gameplay and story of that. But I could see a second one just having more of the same and not adding too much more to the formula, which would be disappoint.

Ogre Battle 64 2, on the 64.

Dark Void 2. I’ve always been enamored with the idea of Dark Void; a dog-fighting flight game that can seamlessly change into a third person shooter is an amazing idea on paper that just needs to be utilized with better objective and combat encounter designs.

edit: I totally believe Bethesda would make Rage 2 considering it’s just as implausible to me as The Evil Within 2 was before it was announced.

Ehrgeiz Zwei. I don’t know that Ehrgeiz is actually a good enough game to deserve a sequel but come on, that’d be kind of rad. And with the FF7 remake coming there’s a chance they’d be able to include the guest characters again.

Bullet Witch 2. I just played through the PC port recently and that game is kinda neat. A bigger, more fleshed out, sequel of that game would be a cool thing to see.

Hellnight 2. It’s a really weird (and mostly bad, if I’m being honest) PS1 horror game but I like it enough that I’d want to see a modern follow-up to it.

Yo, remember when Platinum Games made an Anime Sci-Fi Ship-Management RPG for the DS? Because I do and I would be down as FUCK to see current-day Plantinum Games take on Infinite Space 2.

Tomb Raider 6. Old school tomb raider sequel. Slightly updated polygonal graphics, but make a game that looks 90s but comments on the 90s and Lara Croft in general…

Since we’ve had resurgance for 16 bit throwbacks. We’re dying for a renaissance of the 90s foray into 3D worlds/ polygonal character games. Devil Daggers threatened to bring it back but I truly hope this will become a bigger thing.

Elite Beat Agents 2

Shadows of the Damned 2

+1 Prince of Persia 2
+1 Dark Void 2
+1 Elite Beat Agents 2

Mega Man Legends 3 - The games industry has figured out third-person shooting controls. Bring this back!

Mega Man Battle Network um… 12? I don’t remember what number they stopped on. You know what, just reboot it again. I don’t care about the lore; the combat system was rad. Put it on Switch.

Street Fighter X Tekken 2. I unironically love this game. Sure, the gem system was trash, but it’s a fighting game that plays kinda like Street Fighter but has the way more likable Tekken roster.

Viva Pinata 2
DmC 2

Wasn’t there already a second viva piñata?

Metal Warriors 2. A side-scrolling mech action shooter with open level design, destructible environments, and the ability to hop out of your mech and pilot new ones strewn around the levels. Polish it up with some Halo-style mech hijack moves and a stronger (though still simple) melee combat system and I’d be in luv

let’s hear it for Brink 2

Despite my firm beleif that Sonic 06 is basically Sonic Adventure 3 in all but name, I would be very much down for a game that actually bears that name.
