Hey! I just put together a playlist of all the songs in the tourney, if y’all want to access them easily:

(The songs appear in the same order they do on the bracket to make it easier to sift through!)

Match 2’s songs both bring back good memories, but I voted for Rawk Hawk because the original MMZX soundtrack just makes me want to listen to Gigamix instead… Glad to see FFXIV pop up so many times in the bracket, Soken is a boss theme genius.

I asked my husband to listen along, but didn’t give him the name of the song or what game it was from until after we finished both songs.

Match 1
While No Way Back has a great instrumental track, the vocals are a bit weak and the lyrics are fairly generic. It sounds like a piece that would play for a reoccurring boss fight or for a boss fight after a desperate situation. If this song was the final boss fight, it would feel disappointing.

Champion Red/Blue is a great remix on a classic theme and has good energy that’s fitting for a boss fight. It gets a small point for nostalgia from me, my husband has never played a Pokemon game. I wish the instrumentation was a little different in some parts, namely the bridge. A deeper, brassy sound would work a bit better.

Champion Red/Blue wins because we both felt it was a better representation of a boss theme.

Match 2
Rawk Hawk Battle felt a little generic and too BGM-y. While not a bad song, it also didn’t stand out.

Rockin’ On has a good beat and energy. It also feels like a song that would play during a race or a side-scroller section. (If this fight is a race/side-scroller, please let us know!)

Rockin’ On wins because the energy is better and it stands out more as a song, though neither really stand out as a boss song.

Match 3

Deaf to All but the Song has a pretty good melody line, but also feels a bit lackluster. It feels like it needs another instrument supporting it underneath. Or a good metal cover.

Baile Con La Mariposa doesn’t go anywhere. It’s not a bad song, but takes too long to reach a hook and then continues to wander a bit. It also doesn’t feel like a song that plays during a boss, and without any context of the scene itself, it feels sparse.

Deaf to All wins match 3. As it also turns out, there are some great metal and orchestra covers of this song.

Match 4

J-E-N-O-V-A was the only song on the list my husband immediately recognized. While also admitting his bias toward the song, he also likes how the song is eerie, building to a bridge that feels hopeful and triumphant, then going back to a sense of unease and weirdness.

Turf takes way too long to go anywhere, and when it hits a hook, still doesn’t do anything. Like Baile before, without any context for the fight itself, it just feels like a meandering song.

J-E-N-O-V-A wins for being the most boss-like of the two.

That was fun! Can’t wait for round 2!

I’m super exhausted, so day 1 results and day 2 matches will be posted early tomorrow.

Ah, I missed the first vote somehow! Will have to pay more attention.

I highly suggest everyone listen to the entirety of the Ramuh theme. The best part is towards the end and kinda comes out of nowhere.

absolutetion more like absolute banger

i dont get sonic

Every time I pop into Ramuh I greet my party with a sylphy AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Gets me pumped to watch them die to mechanics. Absolutetion is great but I’ve only ever heard it in-run once, and not for very long…

Surprised there’s not more Furi in the bracket tbh.

Wow, this block currently has two blowouts in it.

Obviously I’ll find out when you post the results but on a wild guess I wanna say that it’s Make This Right and Abyss Watchers. (Just so I can look cool if I’m right.)

RIP Live and Learn :((

I wonder how much second-hand hate It Has Come To This absorbed from Seven Rings in Hand

This thread just reminded of how earthshatteringly amazing the score for Dark Souls 3 is. It hits me right in the heart, just so perfectly haunting, earie and bombastic.

Probably more than it deserves but I imagine being from an era of Sonic that isn’t terribly popular in general, and one that is also rife with buttrock of varying quality, probably doesn’t help much either.

I would have nominated The Chain and The Beat’s theme if I hadn’t wasted my nominations on some of the tracks that had already been nominated!

Day 3 Results

Make This Right (Furi) over Opression (Cave Story), 8-4 (this one was 8-0 for a good while)
Unite, Descent (Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles) over Dragon God (Chrono Cross), 7-5
Saber’s Edge (Final Fantasy XIII) over Adjudicator (Demon’s Souls), 7-6 (I had to break the tie on this one, no idea what people see in Adjudicator)
Abyss Watchers (Dark Souls 3) over It Has Come To This (Sonic and the Secret Rings), 12-0 (lol)

Day 4 Matches

Steinway to Heaven (Crypt of the Necrodancer) vs. Rivers in the Desert (Persona 5)

Area 4 Boss (REZ) vs. Death by Glamour (Undertale)

Battle B2 (Shin Megami Tensei IV) vs. Battle 2 (Final Fantasy IX)

Four Emperors (Final Fantasy IV DS) vs. Final Battle (Final Fantasy Adventure)
