I’m gonna go now, but you should think on the mile-wide chasm between the cost of production on a rerelease of an old game, versus that of a three- to four-year AAA development cycle on a new game, and how much money each would have to independently generate in order to be considered a financial success.
I said original game wasn’t that unsuccessful, and original game is pretty well know and loved. And this is the quote from Ubi people who think the same. And about new one I agree, “they still need to sell it to not-fans, too.”
I just watched first Space Monkey Report:
Couple of things I want to highlight.
- Game is gonna be playable solo and offline, too.
- They going for diversity of all kinds (Michel specifically mentioned transgender character).
- Authored, not procedurally generated content.
- They want to include users even more (creating content for the game).
- Bonus: I’m from one of the top 5 countries in Space Monkey Program (US, UK, France, Russia and Germany). Yay.
It’s not everything, but most interesting stuff for me. Because I can see them delivering on all those things, but also failing on all of them spectacularly. Diversity can be about culture appropriation and stereotypes. Community involvement can backfire. Etc., etc.
In the end nothing really changed for me, I’m still cautiously optimistic. But mostly curious.
