Book club...but music?

I think I get it. so let’s say we get 50 submissions. In week 1 we nominate a, b, c, d, e for a popular vote. a wins vote. gets deleted from the submissions. In week 2 b gets chosen by random selection and gets deleted from the submissions. c, d, e get tossed deleted from submissions and the people who submitted them each get a MUSIC CLUB LIMIT BREAK POINT™. Is that how it works?

P much! or the 4-week cycle version where it takes about a month to refresh, but more get chosen.

It’s basically a compromise between it being purely popular/random, and literally choosing everyone’s album which means it could take months to get through a list before any new submissions can get a look-in.

There should probably be a no-consecutive limit breaks rule, too, to make sure that we don’t end up with just loads being done one after the other, again to keep the list fresh.

In that case I’d say the 4 week option is the best solution. Is it up to the participants to keep track of their own Limit Break points, or do we make a google doc that we update each week, showing which albums are still on the list etc? by my count there are 14 people in the thread who have agreed to try this out, so what if each participant offers up 2 albums each? that’s a pretty substantial list to choose from but not so many that we won’t get through it before next year.

If it were up to me, each member would only be able to submit 1 album per pool. I’d like to think we’re honest enough to keep track of how many times we didn’t make the cut.

That works for me as well, but maybe some of the others should weigh in as well. If we do it that way and then select five albums for voting that would mean 12 weeks of music barring any limit breaks before we select music… I think that sounds pretty fair. The last week would only be 4 albums and no discarded albums but that seems like a good way to cap off a pool.

Sorry, not sure I follow that last one. If (for example) 14 of us take part in the first pool, wouldn’t that mean that we’d get 14 submissions for the first 4 weeks, 4 of which will get picked, and the remaining 10, the users would get a point for? Then for the next 4 weeks, it would be 14 fresh submissions (or however many are taking part now)?

Did you mean that it would be a minimum of 12 weeks before anyone can use a limit break?

OH! completely misunderstood you then. That works for me too, I just thought we would want to go through the 14 submissions first. I think with that many people getting limit break points there’s a rick of votes not really happening at all at some point, but I suppose that’s just the rules balancing out the random element.

The bigger the group is, the higher the chance of some amount of people not being picked and getting those points. If we were to allow that (the points system), we shouldn’t have a no-consecutive rule otherwise it could take months until a person uses their points, and that’s after the months obtaining them.

If they have bad luck and an unpopular taste, yet still want to share it with us, that’s meaningful and should be noted!

Yeah, I thought of that possibility but I think you just fix it by saying that limit breaks have to be used before the start of a new, fresh pool (i.e. before the start of a 4 week run), and it’s first come first serve, so whoever uses it would get their week to have their way, then it would go back to a normal 4 week run, after which the next limit breaker can declare. Or something.

It might be good to have a google doc, maybe.

I’d be down for this. Sounds hype

Is there anyone here that would like to join me and try and set this up and do all the behind the scenes stuff and preparations?

I can sure try!

I’ll help out as well, if it’s not too late.

I’m definitely down. Already got a handful of great music recommendations on the forum so this would be successful for sure.

Hey I just started up a thread about albums and then I remembered we stopped talking about this.

turntable.fm :’(

I loved turntable.fm, I discovered one of my favourite bands of all time that way.
