Diversity in heavy music?

So I’m not as much into metal as hardcore and its various subgenres, but here’s some heavy music with POC/not men. I’ve been trying to listen to more bands where it’s not 4 white dudes, and I commend you for doing the same!

Jesus Piece African-American vocalist, good modern hardcore

XelegyX women vocalist, listen to their demo. Straight Edge metal

Turnstile is a funky hardcore band

Vein Vein is a metalcore band that I thought was just a crappy band ripping off converge, but they’ve grown on me

Punch I played a show with this band when I was a Junior in high school and they blew me away. Great band

The Chariot Good metalcore. This is Christian, but it’s not overt. If that’s not your style please overlook.

Thanks to Kim Kelly at Noisey, I really dug into RAGANA, two women playing self-described “witch doom.”

They’re releasing an EP with Thou later this month and I’m super excited.

Also Myrkur’s last album was rad as hell. Funeral from that album features Chelsea Wolfe.

There’s loads out there, these are all recent (well, except Skunk Anansie, hah) ones I love. RAGNA and King Woman are also fantastic, someone mentioned them above.

Hi there!

Strong recommendation for my favourite musical artist Omar Rodriguez Lopez, His groups include:

post punk At The Drive In from El Paso

The Mars Volta, prog-y, metal-y, Jazz-y greatness, always with African American and Hispanic members/influences

Bosnian Rainbows, synthy rock with the amazing and powerful Teri Gender Bender as lead vocalist. Teri has a stage presence like no other human being on earth, she’s mesmerising.

I’ll also recommend The Diablo Swing Orcheatra, jazz metal band led by an amazing female Opera singer.

Best of luck on your musical journey!

OH DUDE just remembered: Crystal Fairy, which is a Teri/Omar/Buzzo from The Melvins project that pulls heeeeavily from 70’s heavy rock like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin

not yet specifically mentioned, but Teri and Omar (and his frequent collaborator in projects like At the Drive-In, The Mars Volta, and Antemasque, Cedric Bixler-Zavala) are Mexican.

I came here expecting to see Zeal and Ardor mentioned, and was not disappointed, so I’m going to put forward Taiwanese band CTHONIC, whose members are both involved in the Taiwanese independence movement, advocate for self-determination for Tibetans and Uighurs, and occasionally play as a backing band for Babymetal.

I’ve become increasingly interested in finding more metal bands comprised of all black members (or as close to that as possible). I want more diversity in my metal; more points of view.

Here’s my current list, and if anyone knows of more, I’d love to hear about them!

Ohhh, I’m glad someone posted. Reminded me to check this thread out again. I was looking into Noisey’s top songs and albums of 2018 and learned about Minority Threat. Their most recent album is sooo fucking dope.

Hell yes! :metal: Thank you so much for sharing.

Looooove this thread and happy to add more to it:

Vodun

Great stoner metal band with amazing vocals.

Suffocation

Brutal death metal pioneers, one of my all-time favorites.

Witch Mountain

I’ve linked these folks before in the metal thread, but they deserve more recognition. Great blues-y doom metal with some of the best singing in the scene today.
