End of Year 2019: Favorite Game Music

The two Atelier genders, recorder-flute-things and guitar solos.

Ryza adds a third: Hayato Asano/Blue Reflection

Loved the River City Girls soundtrack, great synthpop and vocal work:

the intro song
so many bangers to choose from, i’ll post two more:

I swear sometimes I’d play just to listen to some of these tracks. Just wander around the mall kicking ass.

Ahhhhh!!! I so want to play that but there’s no human man I could get it in time for my Top 10 List when I still have PokĆ©mon and Star Wars. D:

Next time I need a game on my Switch, its gonna be River City Girls.

Haven’t seen many people talk about it, but I think Resident Evil 2’s soundtrack was the first time music in a Resident Evil game has ever jumped out at me at all.

Just a collection of pretty cool game music that hasn’t been shared yet.

While not NEARLY as technically impressive as Ape Out, I still love the procedural whimsical music of the goose.

The Apex Legends start of round music fucking SLAPS.

More Koji Kondo 8-bit chiptunes is just a blessing, but just all the music and remixes in this game are choice.

I haven’t gotten to Shadowbringers content yet, but I couldn’t NOT spoil myself and check out the Eden boss fight with this amazing Force Your Way remix.

Zanki Zero is such a strange game.

I feel too many people slept on Pikuniku this year.

EDIT:

Little Town Hero gave us another Toby Fox soundtrack this year and that is worth the price of admission alone.

Awwww I got to this late. Seconding Anodyne 2, Hypnospace, Later Alligator, DMC5, Dicey Dungeons, Hades, the Celeste expansion, and of course Outer Wilds - this cue in particular absolutely devastated me emotionally both times it’s used (mid-to-late-game spoilers):

The poor Nomai :sob: :sob: :sob:

Also for anyone who played Hypnospace and hasn’t seen this yet, the Chowder Man is back with a holiday present:

The song at the end of outer wilds makes me very sad

LITTLE TOWN HERO’s OST is absolutely lovely.

I could barely make it past the first 10 hours of the game due to the tedium, but I still really adore the vibes from this game!

One of the first tunes you encounter in Fire Emblem: Three Houses is this haunting, etherial theme. It’s a haunting mix of rhythmic synths, lush sounds, and ominous Gregorian-esque chants.

The best overall music in a game this year for me is probably cheating since the majority of it is from a 6-year-old soundtrack, but hey a Kill la Kill game came out this year. I haven’t played most of it so I dunno how much of the anime soundtrack ultimately gets used, but in barely any time with the story mode I’ve heard a lot of the bangers already.

I definitely don’t think the new music that’s in the game is quite as good as the old stuff, though.

I’ve been trying to beat Crystallised on Beat Saber on Expert for the last 6 months. I can get aobut 2/3 the way through, so much of it has been drilled into my conscious.

They also released a Rocket League music pack, so these tracks are probably slightly older. However Glide is the 80s fun times at the mall soundtrack of choice.

I’d also say that the music of The Outer Wilds is such a key ingredient into what makes that game work. Enhancing the campfire cosiness, the explority curiousity along with the cosmic loneliness.

During the many times in which the sun supernova-ed and the music stopped, I’d usually just find a good spot to watch the spectacle.

Also I would concur that the Apex Legends has excellent music but the jumpmaster music does indeed slap, pop and bang, makes you feel invincible for the first 10 seconds in which you scramble for weapons but are inevitably peacekeepered out of existence. It has the same freewheeling space frontier vibe of the music of Titanfall 2 but adds more synths.

Even the lobby music is maintains the feeling that you are a legend grabbing a quick cup of tea.

I can’t get over how good the soundtrack in Sayonara: Wild Hearts was. It was the exact perfect mix of genres to make every level feel unique, while still coherent as an overall video game album. I’m not normally the kind of person to listen to video game music outside of a game, but I put it on during a recent drive to go see my partner and it was the exact right mix of poignant and optimistic, making me thankful for everything in my life as I drove along.
