I’ve actually only watched one anime from this decade since I got back into the medium a couple of years ago: Nichijou!
Luckily it’s also excellent and almost certainly would have topped my list if I had been watching more contemporary anime anyway.

I’m here to amend my previous top 20. I previously said that 1 was Symphogear, 2 was Monthly Girl’s Nzaki-kun, and I didn’t care about numbers 3-20. This is incorrect. 3 is Chihayafuru. I don’t care about numbers 4-20.
I think I need to watch Penguindrum again sometime because I barely remember it and these are some strong reccomendations.
I feel like Uchoten Kazoku (The Eccentric Family) has been overlooked (not here, in general). It’s about Tenuki and Tengu secretly living amoung humans in modern Japan. If you’ve seen the Ghibli movie Pom Poko, a continuation of that theme. The main story is a prominent family of Tanuki dealing with the sudden death of the patriarch (eaten in hot pot). Actually a very moving story about loss, forgiveness, the unfair nature of reality, having conflicting feelings about people you love, etc.
Ah, yea, I forgot about Uchoten. I also forgot about Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, which I absolutely should not have.
The Rakugo anime is SO good! And it was someone in this forum that introduced me to it (My apologies to whoever it was because I don’t remember, also thanks)
After finally watching it this week, I think I might have to retroactively add Sarazanmai to my list for being the most Ikuhara anime I’ve ever seen (I still need to watch Peguindrum…sorry). I mean, there’s queer anime, and then there’s [Ending spoilers] meta commentary on the “Bury Your Gays” trope by literally making it so a gay man instantly dies when he explicitly proclaims his love for his partner, only to then have both come back to life in the final conflict atop a rainbow as they help the heroes fight against the abstract concept otter representing the commodifying/otherizing functions of capitalism.
