Favorite Companion

Maya from Phoenix Wright was great, she was such a perfect contrast to Phoenix’s straight man character. She’s endearing as all get out and always ready to back Phoenix up.

Repede from Tales of Vesperia immediately popped into my mind. He’s probably the coolest video game dog ever. His personality was independent enough for him to stand out as his own character instead of just being an attachment to the main character, but at the same time he always 100% had Yuri’s back.

i can’t pick just one b/c i’m very indecisive and bad at remembering things but i absolutely adore so many of the companions in new vegas! if i had to pick just one of them christine has always really stuck with me for some reason? raul is also perfect though.

the other one who comes to mind is morrigan, who i love with all my heart. in origins at least, i bounced off inquisition too early to really see much of her there. “grumpy swamp witch who hates men and had a shitty parent situation” as a character concept is basically pandering directly to me, and i will never in my life forgive bioware for making her straight.

For as frustrating as he (it?) could be, I think I’d have to go with Trico from The Last Guardian. I would do anything to protect my precious baby catbird dogfriend. That whole game felt like I was raising a real puppy – Trico was kind of clumsy and adorably goofy and dumb at times, but also fiercely loyal and protective.

I don’t even like Twilight Princess, but Midna continues to be a favourite of mine. There’s just something about that imp lady not taking any of your shit.

My dog from Fable 2.

At the end of the game where it gives you all these ‘difficult’ choices.

TO HELL WITH THE REST OF ALBION. GIVE ME MY DOG BACK DAMMIT.

Easiest video game decision ever.

Pellagina is my favorite companion from Pillars of Eternity, which pretty good companions all around
But I really love Pellagina because, if you bring her along for a certain scene and make a few specific choices, she gets to yell at (a) God, which is pretty dope.

Glory my cyborg best friend from Shadowrun: Dragonfall is pretty up there but also every single person in Kentucky Route Zero

Oh no wait actually it’s every single party member from Nier who I love more than life itself

(also blade wolf, BUT ALSO GOBBET)

I haven’t played Dragon’s Dogma myself but here’s a good piece about pawns (and anxiety), imo

Oh man, Anders is pretty decent, but honestly he can fuck off. We loved each other, or at least my fictional extrapolation of Hawke did. You don’t do me dirty like that. Not even once.

I can complain about Fallout 4 from dawn to dusk, but Nick Valentine was actually a really really cool companion. He has an interesting character arc, and he’s even involved, at least tangentially, with the best part of the game AKA Far Harbor. I wish he he got more than “extra dialogue” in the DLC because it honestly would have been super interesting for him to have a more active role in that story.

Struggling to pick my favourite Dragon Age companion… They’re all good, guys, even the terrible ones like Oghren.
So I’m going to say Riku in Kingdom Hearts 2 for pandering to my emo teen younger self.

Does Chie count as a companion? It’s Chie. I’ll train with you any day, girl.

Runner-up awards go to Ellie (TLoU), BT (Tifa2), Clank (R&C), and Garrus (ME).

I’ve only just finished the first dungeon in Persona 5, but I like Morgana a whole lot. I was a big Teddie fan, as well, but there’s something super endearing about bringing Morgana around with you all the time.

When I was a kid the only class I could play in Diablo 2 was necromancer because the skeleton guys made it feel less lonely, so I still have a soft spot in my heart for them.

As for companions that can actually talk and are more personalities rather than just demon sword fodder - Kreia in KOTOR 2 was very cool, Grim Fandango’s Glottis was a perfect companion for Manny, and I really really want to find out what the deal with the ghosts in Destiny is eventually.

Boone is a GOAT companion for sure!

I was a huge fan of Fawkes from Fallout 3 as well; he was the first character that I felt was really likeable, which might have had something to do with the fact that we were both unhappy adolescents who didn’t connect with our peers.

It also helped that he was a borderline invulnerable killing machine who made the game piss easy.

fallout new vegas - Veronica She just punch stuff, is part of the brotherhood, and a nice story line.
Mass effect - Tali She a sweetheart with a love for ships and her race is very interesting.
Shadow of the Colossus - Agro Pretty much got you everywhere

@Video_Games Pallengina is such an underrated character and I’m stoked she’s returning for PoE2. She was my favorite companion from the first installment by far!!

Uhm, I’m assuming that “companion” means people who are party members, and not, say, non-travelling along characters such as a certain golden-clad ambassador from Dragon Age:Inquisition…Speaking of that IP, some of my favorite companions of all time are Morrigan, Isabela, and Cassandra. From the Mass Effect universe my favorites are Liara and, more recently, Vetra.

Fallout 4 had a bunch of good tagalongs as well. I loved Curie and Preston Garvey…and dogmeat, how could I forget dogmeat? This world needs more dog companions.

That mini quest where Veronica just really wants you to find her a dress to wear I thought was cool. Companions in that game feel like real people and not just an extra pair of fists that follow you around to help punch scorpions

I think I ended up getting Pallegina really late in my playthrough and not using her much. Durance made an impression, though - he’s hateful and honestly pretty despicable but IMO a stellar example of how someone can be completely awful and still have a high charisma stat. He’s just /compelling/. Kind of like Kreia except he constantly calls his god gendered slurs.

My favorite companion is Garrus, though. No Shepard without Vakarian and all. Honorable mention to Cassandra, who far surpassed my highest expectations to become my one true video game crush. Every time I think ‘surely I don’t love her that much’ and go back to the game… I remember that yes, yes I do.

Morte. Undeniably untrustworthy, and the best friend a scarred fool could ask for.
