This is one of my beefs. People constantly telling me she feels betrayed and hated… but we’ve only seen the North be (understandably) cautious of her, and the supporters of Cersei rightfully want her dead.
Nothing has been shown of other lords, House Tarly was barely touched on and seemingly forgotten. Yara and Theon seemed on-board (Ayyyyyy see what I did there) and the Northerners havent rejected her… they just love John.
Which was exactly what she initially wanted to do (along with Oleanna), until the previously clever, and now totally moronic Tyrion talked her into a different, overly convulted plan that utterly backfired in the most spectacular way possible. Seriously, just take the 3 dragons, raze Euron’s fleet, burn the outer walls, and lay siege to the city. That’s all they had to do, and this thing could’ve ended a long time ago.
Yeah, Dany has literally been right about everything since landing in Westeros and her advisors wrong. They wouldn’t even have lost any dragons, since they wouldn’t have needed to go North of the wall and Qyburn wouldn’t have developed the SAM ballistae.
But yeah, the peasants should just eat the nobles tbf.
For the last two seasons (at least, can’t say I remember enough from further back), it’s felt like violence is either Brutal or Heroic, but never both, in a way that it wasn’t earlier on. Jon Snow lithely dancing through the crowds, sword on a swivel, foes bloodlessly falling to their feet, or this guy’s face fucking smashed in and then this other guy’s hands chopped off and he screams and these people crushed under rubble look at this chick’s head smeared on the ground holy shit khaleesi is a shithead!!
It’s visually didactic in a frustratingly condescending way. Like are you serious? Jon Snow knows how to kill people gently? What are we trying to do here.
Also I am tired of the shellshock slow-mo close-ups of people’s faces in the middle of a violent rush. It happened fully like 10 times in the battle a few episodes ago against the whitewalkers and we got a few this time, too.
I think my main issue is they are taking too many lessons from US war movies. When our hearts are supposed to swell with pride for our heroes, it’s a WW2 movie, and when we are supposed to be disgusted by the pointlessness of war, it’s a Vietnam movie.
Seriously. If there’s one thing about Tyrion’s arc, it’s that he’s crap at war. He’s actually pretty damn good at overseeing peace, because in that case, finding clean mutualistic solutions to problems can actually work.
War in the GoT millieu, doesn’t have time for fancy plans. They should have just won, and sorted the rest out later, as Papa Lannister more or less told everyone who would listen when he was still alive. But, like a horror movie, our protagonists have to do the fanciest, dumbest possible thing to keep the engine running.
Aside: I did not see that recap, since I just watched the last two eps back to back. Hearing voices? That is some lazy, weak stuff. Damn.
fwiw I didn’t read it as “hearing voices” but more as an aural accumulation of all of the transgressions against her. It’s just the shot of her face while she’s watching her friend get murdered, while audio snippets of people talking about her play in rapid succession. It’s definitely suggesting she’s about to snap, but I think calling it “hearing voices” is a stretch.
I don’t think she “snapped”, I think it was a decision she believes is rational and the only way she’ll “break the wheel”. She might spout off something about how King’s Landing rolls over and lets whoever walks in and takes it rule.
True, she’s always been an ends justify the means type, her blasé explanation to her advisers of why she did it is probably how the finale starts off and if she had said something to someone before jumping back on her dragon I think it would have made more sense but I hope we get it next episode.
I haven’t enjoyed the last few season of the show at all and I am now completely checked out after the Long Night.
However I will say I am glad they finally pulled the trigger on Dany’s heel turn since we’ve been talking about this happening since season 2 or 3. Her father was a tyrant, her brother would have been a tyrant also if Drogo hadn’t killed him. She was a white savoir with a messiah complex who thought she was born to rule and every time she burned or crucified someone, every time she conquered, uprooted or manipulated whole peoples it was for her own personal gain in getting her “birth right”. Every time she rhymed off her 30 titles like they meant something was all a step in the direction of her also becoming a tyrant.
Dany was never interested in actually breaking the wheel. She just wanted her to be the only spoke. She wanted to replace feudalism with an absolute monarchy.
I dont’ think many people are really upset that Dany ended up being in this position. Its been forshadowed. Its just that Forshadowing doesn’t equal character progression? Everything about Dany in the last two seasons is rushed and clumsy. But whatever, Dany is only one cog in the machine, full of other characters acting dumb and contrived (Hey Varys and Tyrion) Stupid endings (Glad Clegane bowl was hype and not the culmination of a shitty meme that counteracts the Hound’s character arc) and other crap. Though Dany was kinda the crown jewel. I mean i don’t think anyone here arguing against her is wrong per say. I just argue against the arc in general being at all well thought out at all. This isn’t "seeking the throne and monarchy is going to lead you into destruction no matter what. Its “Holy Shit MAD QUEEN GUYS, how unexpected is this, she’s killing the younglings, how twisty!”
Or as David Benihof has eloquently put it: “Themes are for eighth grade book reports.”
For years now at this point I’ve been expecting to be disappointed with the Clegane stuff… and I was. I know it meant a lot to Sandor but Zombie Gregor was just never interesting to me. That feud ended when they wasted Oberyn.
Also shout outs to Euron for getting me to ask aloud “why is this scene even happening?” one more time on his way out.
McShane in interviews basically said he took the role because it was only 1 episode and intimated that he didn’t really want or expect Deadwood to go as long as it did.
I kept waiting for Kings Landing to go up in a big green fireball because of the wildfire we learned was under the city a few seasons back but instead they just added some green poofs every now and then.
