I saw Powerman 5000 in high school. They were by far the best out of the 4 bands performing. (I think papa roach was headlining lol) they played their song supervillian off of their upcoming album and it was great. It was a fun set haha.
That family has a very high power level, imo
NFS Underground happened, too, and never has a soundtrack more accurately invoked a game’s tone.
Edit: That came off as snark towards NFS Underground. And it is a little. But that game had no illusions about what it was and I played the hell out of it. The 100% bro tone of that soundtrack really fit what they were doing, and that was just fine for drifting, drag racing and pretending to tune a sick ride. I still keep a few of these tracks in playlists.
I’m disappointed that this has not been posted yet.
NO ACTUAL VIDEO GAME MUSIC WITH THEMATIC INTENT THAT FITS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE UNIVERSE!!!
It’s gotta not fit or be outright licensed music with little rhyme or reason! Think like Sonic themes except Sonic Boom from Sonic CD. The lyrics have to make ABSOLUTELY no sense in context, or be so bare bones that a single word change completely changes the context (ala change Shadow’s name in All Hail Shadow and the song fits into any franchise because it has no specifics).
In other words, the God Hand theme song does not count because it is very much about Gene and the God Hand, but Open Your Heart would because it has no specifics to Sonic or the events of Sonic Adventure.
Korn’s theme song for Haze is a bad song for a bad game!
“Gaming for me is a Religion and Haze is the Shit.”
- Jonathan Davis, Lead Singer of Korn
B-but the psi-ops one you posted does kinda have thematic intent that fits the context of the universe?
I’m so confused right now.
Not really. It’s basically an angsty love song except they changed the lyrics a bit to mention psychic powers in extremely half-thought out ways.
In this vein, run like hell had 2 different breaking benjamin songs used randomly as boss themes.
I finally remember the obvious choice that was I missing that I just couldn’t put my finger on.
There was a sing-a-long for this in the crowd before Top 8 of Street Fighter V at EVO on sunday.
I’m going to allow this.
Shout out to Sonic Forces for continuing this trend
Including a track that feels like it comes from Shadow the Hedgehog
(EDIT: I guess only the latter really fits with this thread, woops)
I don’t know if this falls into the guidelines considering I actually love it, but it needs more exposure
Just about every sports game around this time commissioned a theme song for their intro cinematic. I think the one that has the most clout was the NBA Live 2003 soundtrack, with an original song by Fabolous:
The PS2 version of NBA Live 2003 came with a copy of the soundtrack, thus making the NBA Live 2003 soundtrack (to my knowledge) the only video game soundtrack to achieve a Platinum certification by the RIAA.
Madden 2002 had an original song by Pharoahe Monch, the opening verse of which is “Unravel the world of John Madden”
But my favorite comes from MLB Slugfest 20-03 by Midway, which had Nu-Metal band Dry Kill Logic create the song “Riot at the Bat Rack” with an accompanying music video available on the Gamecube disc
