Not a lot in character-driven games unless I’ve made a serious mistake when specing the character. Some old RPGs like KOTOR or Baulders Gate was really bad about that.
Strategy games however…yes, I will re-roll the seed and all if I feel like I’m not having fun or it’s not going the way I want. Civilization and Stellaris are notorious for me ditching a seed after half-hour of play because I know I was put in a bad spot.
Recently I re-rolled my Spain run in Civ VI because I spawned next to the Mongolians and before I could get a good defense up, they declared war on me and already had several horseman units rampaging through my territory.
I remember back when Dragon Age Inquisition came out I went through the first few missions of the game at least six times because I kept restarting to try and create a good looking character.
I’ve done this in every Bioware RPG since Mass Effect. The way they light their character creation screens generally makes it so how your character looks there often isn’t indicative of how of how they’re actually going to look in the world and it’s wild to me that BioWare doesn’t let you preview different lighting effects while you’re creating your character.
Every character creator should be the one from Final Fantasy 14 is what I’m saying. That one lets you place your character in the three major environments you’re going to be in though the game to see how they’ll look in every situation.
The lighting in that prison cell at character creation in DA:I (and Oblivion, for that matter) is in no ways representative of the lighting engine for “how you’ll be represented in game,” so… it’s especially hard to know how you’ll look once outside.
Very rarely, if only I rolled a really imbalanced class/prof/setup etc. which really sux or I can play with faceroll and experience become boring!.. But usually, I investigate the process a bit before starting
I did this the first time I played DA:I because I created a bleached blonde posh fancy lad and realised an hour later I had created medieval Milo Yiannapoulos.
I feel like I do this a lot of RPGs, just can’t remember the last time I did it. Usually when I feel like I’ve blown resources trying to learn a game. Then restarting makes more sense and I get back to where I left of faster and more efficiently.
I do this in FIFA a lot. Mainly cause mid season roster changes. But sometimes I wanna change my transfer policy and bring in different players sooner, try a harder difficulty, or start in a lower league and build my own career up.
I have to stop myself compulsively rerolling in any game with multiple paths, both because of perfectionism and also a distressing tendency to want to see all the possible results.
This also means I have a horrible time with any game which has limited saves, or limited restarts…
I am the worst at this only really when it comes to mobile free-to-play games especially any sort of gatcha game where that opening roll can kind of determine how easy/difficult the rest of the game is gonna be. I don’t know how many hours and hours I’ve spent replaying the demos of Puzzle & Dragons and Fire Emblem: Heroes.
I feel like an odd one here, but I avoid re-rolling unless there’s something driving me to do so. Normally it’s either I love the game so much that I want to play more in another style, or I really want to show a friend and start-over to play co-op with them.
OTOH, games that led me down a path to a build or choice that isn’t going to work, I need to have seen something in the game that makes me think it deserves the second chance over the pile of games that I haven’t gotten to yet.
I drive myself a little bit nuts with re-rolls, to the extent where I end up ruining some games for me. I played the first part of Divinity OS 2 so many times that by the time I left fort joy I was semi burned out on it… Hopefully I’ll go back to it at some point with a clear head.
Xcom 2 falls into this category, but I just don’t think it’s for me.
