Where are the new forums going to be officially?
Thanks. I like the “This is not a forum that centers around video gaming as a consumerist property, but rather a community of like-minded people that celebrates the kind of perspectives that Waypoint, the site we’re attached to, tries hard to cultivate.” bit.
I ran a video game discussion board years ago, and I was extremely disheartened when the gaming side of it eventually devolved into shallow consumerism, which ultimately led to me handing it over to someone else.

Please read 3 posts above yours. There are better places out there to be informed on that stuff (and as far as we know, even the official info hasn’t been completely true and there’s been a lot of hearsay going on). If we’re going to be posting around here, let’s try to make Waypoint our new home and adapt to it instead of treating it as a temporary patch.
Its just been hard to find a place to discuss the Neo Gaf situation at all.
Every message board I frequent has locked the topic. I just guess I wanted to express how confused some of us still are. We’re adrift and desperately trying to figure things out.
Waypoint isn’t obligated to host that conversation and it isn’t fair to ask you to though so I understand.

Thanks to you and @Buckle for your responses. I understand that the situation is difficult for those of you who came from NeoGAF right now, and I can tell by the way that these threads kind of all start going the same way content-wise that there must be no other welcoming place to freely discuss the events.
However, I feel that we already hosted a thread that was essentially a wake for NeoGAF yesterday, and it received over 1,000 posts before it had to be locked due to going so fast that we could not keep up with the off-topic or inappropriate responses. We also don’t believe that, as a forum, we should host mega-threads specifically about one other website. While I have witnessed a great deal of the newcomers being awesome and believe they would be able to have a real conversation, trying it again would only add additional stress to our small moderation team (which has really been through it in the past day, believe us!)
Also, I really do appreciate that you see us as a refuge, but I’m sure there are better words to use (I’ve seen simply ‘GAFers’ a lot) that do not call up real-world situations in which people’s lives are in jeopardy.

Glad you said it. Seeing all the people claiming the word “refugee” on the Welcome thread feels icky. You’re forumless, not stateless.

It’s just been a weird couple days because something that was part of my daily…or should I say hourly life, suddenly disappeared. But it’s not an extremely serious setback or anything…it’s just a weird feeling that I and others will get over one way or the other.
Personally I am done talking about GAF outside of this thread and will try my best to meaningfully contribute (or mostly just read stuff) while I’m using the Waypoint forums.

All GAF stuff aside, I am really glad I found this forum, full stop. It’s a treasure, and not just for the great mods who seem to really care about being inclusive and understanding, but for the community that really seems to be filled with folks looking out for each other and posting with respect.
(The content on site is great too, but I already knew that,)

I absolutely agree, the culture here seems like such a natural fit for me and i look forward to getting to know the community better.
Come on dude don’t go there. These are people risking their lives to find a better future for their families and whatnot.
This is not what we have here.
Also yo GAF, we need to stop with the self pity for a while and give this place a chance and also see what the other guys are cooking up.

The destruction of GAF (even if it may well be warranted) seems likely to leave a void that no one site is going to fill, which makes me sad. The last time I felt like this was when 1up (functionally) shuttered (for different reasons, of course), which was a case where nothing has really came along that felt the same.

In a literal sense, you are of course correct. “Refuge” and “refugee” can be used metaphorically. But given the politics of the time, and the context that the word is arising in, I think it’s a metaphor best left untouched.
NeoGAF closed because its owner failed to answer or even admit wrongdoing for sexual crimes. Even if it does come back, as Malka claims it will in the Waypoint article, I’m not going to return. That place is not home.
EDIT: Caught your edit. I feel you on an emotional level. That’s 12 years of posts gone. But it happens…looks doe-eyed at the old Metacritic forums

Malka really does not appear to understand that this success of the forum was not due to him in any great part, but due to the users that happened to collect around it. He seems to believe that he will be able to simply restart and everything will go as before, because of the name and his involvement.
But a lot of important people are gone, probably forever. Hopefully their voices have moved to new places and they have found new homes and they will find happiness.
I’m going to try here. I am never going back. Even if the allegations are proven completely false he has shown a lack of good judgment that has helped me move on to find a place with a better foundation.
Thank you for this excellent article that filled in a lot of information that I had been wondering about in the past couple of days.

We former gaffers will be fine. There are lots of other forums (like this one) we can join and a gaf successor forum is being cooked up by what seems to be a really strong team
With Evilore saying he wants to transition to a site focused only on games and gaming news. No off-topic, no politics. It sounds like he’s aiming for a different kind of crowd
