Yoshi has a house? Sort of? It’s trees. It’s got a mail box and a fireplace but it’s trees… what part does he live in? Maybe the fireplace is a natural rock formation.
Maybe he is an intelligent animal who Is just mimicking humanity with no real understanding behind his actions. It would explain why he put a fireplace in the middle of some trees

According to the canonical Movie that came out with Bob Hoskins as Mario and the other guy as his son Luigi, in the Mario universe, people evolved from dinosaurs. Therefore, Yoshi, who is a dinosaur, is just like a person, but earlier maybe. So, I think, in context, Yoshi can be treated as a person just without clothes other than shoes and saddle. But he’s a dinosaur so he doesn’t need them, the shoes are probably just precautionary so he doesn’t hurt his feet from kicking.
I firmly believe that at some point between Mario World and Yoshi’s Island, Yoshis evolved and gained true sapience, allowing them to properly communicate with Mario so he would stop jumping them into pits.

Firstly the proper name T. Yoshisaur Munchakoopas. It is in fact the species name indicating that there is no named Yoshi that makes repreated appearances in the the Mario related titles.
The koopas reference in the species indicates that are seen as being in the same evolutionary level as the common koopa. All Yoshis seen so far are disposable interchangeable lower life forms.
None seem to exhibit the mutant gene that makes Bowser and his biological and/or adopted children display higher plumber, toadstool, and princess level intelligences.

I see Yoshi as an at least somewhat-sapient animal. It’s okay for him to have a gun, because he knows the difference between friend and foe and the power said gun possesses.
