Good to see a MovieGaf face
Gives me hope XD
Another ex Gaffer here (was Fjordson there). Really sad to see the site go. Been posting there for almost decade in a variety of fantasy sub-communities full of cool people and useful people.
GAF was way, way more than just people arguing about new video games. Honestly, a lot of the best threads and communities had nothing to do with modern gaming. Was just a fantastic and active forum for a wide variety of hobbies and interests.
Sounds like some people are getting a follow up site made soon, just hope that can take off before all the former Gaffers out there get too scattered.
Kotaku seems to have put up an updated article here that is the most detailed summar y I’ve seen so far. They apparently interviewed the victim over the phone.
TBH I feel a little lost without being able to browse GAF over my morning coffee… it was almost a one-stop shop for catching up on the daily zeitgeist. I will miss the community, but I’m ready to move on. I have to admit, often I wanted to post something or add to a thread, but was too afraid I’d get banned… never mind.
Waypoint looks pretty cool. Hi guys!

I remember it was around 2012, I’d been listening to my first podcast, 4PlayerPodcast. I’d just started high school and over the years I’d heard them mention getting news from some site called “NeoGAF”. This time they mentioned it due to rumors about a new PlayStation, so I finally visited. I was enthralled by all the insiders and rumors and hype. I began visiting regularly. In February of 2013, the PlayStation 4 was finally revealed and I had one tab watching the conference and the other reading GAF posts about it.
I remember being so excited, hyped and intoxicated by the atmosphere. I’d just gotten an iPhone 4S and was able to visit the site where I went, even to visit a family member in the hospital… A month later that family member died, which only worsening what I would realize years later was clinical depression.
I threw myself into GAF, lurking for several years, remembering posters, learning in-jokes, being an invisible part of the community. GAF helped me press onward through the immense pain I was feeling and became a major part of my life. As a news aggregator, it was perfect, on top of that, I loved all the unique discussions and micro-communities. Finally, in 2016 I was accepted into a college, and with that came a new email address. Finally, I could join. It wasn’t until seven months later on December 17th that my account was approved and I felt so excited.
For 4-5 years I held on to GAF, I was finally a part of that family. Now it’s just gone. I feel a part of myself is empty. I believe the accuser, and if all is true, then Tyler Malka is a repugnant human being, and now all I can feel is the shame that I ever came across a site owned by such a person
I have never had any problems with him. He was always quick to help and I liked how he has been the first to talk harsh truths about the gaming community for years.
I can see why that would get him many enemies, but honestly this is the first I’ve ever heard of people having problems with him.
Edit: Actually though… wasn’t there something about him being complicit with Tyler? That would definitely damage my opinion of him.
Don’t you say that! Don’t you ever say that!
I don’t want to live in a world where I can’t read through that thread if the reviews are terrible.
The BVS one was incredible.
Would totally be up for that too. Drifted off of ComicGAF as I haven’t been keeping up to date with reading stuff, but always have been intending to hop back in properly when I have the time. (And glad to see familiar faces from in there.)
Feels crazy. Neogaf has been my home for gaming info and discussion for quite some time.
I had no idea about all of these allegations and what happened in 2012. Totally took me by surprise as I found Neogaf to be intolerant to that kind of behavior.
Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t perfect, but there were a lot of good people on there posting great threads.
I wouldn’t go back to the site based on the info we currently have though (maybe to delete my account).
I’m new to Waypoint, so not sure how well this place can replace it, but if not, I’m hopeful that something pops up that provides that same sense of community. I liked the idea that users couldn’t just sign up and start shit posting right away. While you would still find some Junior members (and even some senior members) post some toxicity. For the most part, it was weeded out. Looks like there was also some political banning as well, which I was not aware of and is unfortunate.
It’s sad day. R.I.P. Gaf.
Speaking of… where can I go to ask random stupid questions now about powers and power levels and get an answer from Slayven?
Thanks for the link henhowc.
Sad to see GAF going down in flames, but would have left sooner if I’d seen some of the previous stuff he had posted. Most people were pretty cool though.
I was a bit lost during football, usually browsing along with NFL and College Football communities. Didn’t know what to do with my hands lol.
I’ll definitely miss some of the smaller communities from NeoGaf (and that is all) a bit but WayPoint seems like a nice place as well so its cool to find a community that seems so fun and welcoming as well.
I guess this will probably be the place I come to chat about things.
Feel like confirming emails is all there could’ve been to it. So the process was mostly just waiting. No idea why some waited months and others years.
He is on the gaf Discord from what i’ve seen.
It would have been PUBG and the meltdowns would have been glorious.
Ohh, pretty awesome that realtime update.
I have no idea how i heard about NeoGaf, wish i could recall. It was 2008-ish.
Hey all, we’ve locked this thread because it’s impossible for moderators to keep up with and we wanted to end it with some key points:
- You are all welcome here.
- This forum is not, nor will it ever be, NeoGAF.
- If you are looking for the next NeoGAF you are going to be swiftly and profoundly disappointed.
- Those who found NeoGAF’s moderation too harsh for their personal or political views should review Waypoint as a site and the forum rules before deciding that this is their new Internet home.
In the past 24 hours, our site’s population has grown by over 1,000 new users. We share these numbers to give new users an idea of the effect the influx has had on our community. In the last month previously, there were 265 new users. We also want our users who were here before the influx and have made the Waypoint forums what they are to know that we are working hard to maintain the established experience and will not let it become something else.
There are certain types of posts that were totally cool over at NeoGAF that aren’t here. Posts such as raw sales data, news repository posts, box office threads, sales threads, review aggregation threads, site specific threads (breaks rule 10), investigative stuff (breaks rule 10), and things of that nature are going to be closed because we don’t feel they fit the paradigm that we want to uphold here at Waypoint. This is a forum focused on inclusivity and discussion and we want to keep it that way.
This is not a forum that centers around video gaming as a consumerist property, but rather a community of like-minded people that celebrates the kind of perspectives that Waypoint, the site we’re attached to, tries hard to cultivate.
To that end, it’s worth mentioning that this forum is moderated differently than NeoGAF and you should read and internalize the Rules and Code of Conduct, always viewable at the top of each page. The mods take them seriously and you should as well.
A couple answers to questions that keep popping up in this thread:
If you want to make a thread to discuss a specific game, movie, artist, or other artistic work, please feel free. If you plan for your thread to contain several images, please add the tag [Image-Heavy] in the topic title, so that users on connections with data caps can know what to expect. Same with spoilers.
Waypoint mods have been communicating with the mods of the GAF Discord. Theirs is temporarily locked. Waypoint’s is also temporarily locked.
An abbreviated list of things to not do:
Bring beef from another platform here.
Make jokes in the pronoun field. The team is committed to the safety of our marginalized users, so we feel having guidelines for pronoun usage on the forums encourages the user base to take them seriously. It helps everyone communicate with other forum posters using the pronouns they go by and is inclusive.
"But wait, where do we talk about the actual closure of GAF as a news story?"
There is a 99% chance this will be discussed on tomorrow’s Waypoint Radio. There will be opportunity to discuss it in the dedicated thread for the episode, although it will be regulated to stay on topic with what’s discussed on the show. Until then, we encourage you to take a look around.
