Hey everyone, newbie here. I’ve been a lurker on NeoGAF for about 2 years but never made an account. It’s weird how it still felt like a community I belonged in despite me never engaging in discussion. It was nice to read progressive discussions and keep up to date on gaming news, and actual news. I used to use reddit sometimes but…I feel like that doesn’t need much explanation as to why I don’t go there anymore. I feel for the victims and I hope this scumbag loses everything to say the least.
Well, I’m looking forward to joining the Waypoint community! I’ve caught some streams and podcasts every now and then, and everyone here seems very welcoming.
Hey ya’ll,
I was a GAF member under the name bizzarewars. To this day I am embarrassed that I spelled bizarre wrong, and I never did manage to PM a mod to change my name to my PSN handle, but that’s beside the point.
I was a member for three years or so, and the news today came as a major bummer. I still look back on the memories of my brother telling me about the website, my membership getting accepted, getting promoted from a junior member, and, most importantly, having several of my dumb memes quoted with goofy reaction gifs when Battle of Gods announced Jesus as a playable character fondly. It’s just a damn shame that these good memories of mine are now clouded by Tyler Malka’s heinous actions towards women.
If anything good comes from this (and I recognize the inherent selfishness of uttering a phrase like that after ending the previous paragraph by mentioning circumstances that are far more awful than an internet forum I frequented being shut down) it’s that this has expedited the process of me joining the Waypoint forums. I’ve definitely been meaning to get involved with the community after enjoying all the work that Austin and the crew have been doing, so I suppose that’s a bit of a silver lining for me.
It’s just a bummer, though. If the whole ordeal with Nick Robinson didn’t nail it into me, this sure did; I really shouldn’t just assume that all people, especially people with some degree of power, who espouse ideologies that I agree with are on the level. Austin hit the nail on the head with his critique of “soft boy” culture a while ago. People really should be defined by their goodness, and I certainly shouldn’t just follow people who I assume are on the level so blindly.
I had a lot of respect for Evilore, especially when he recently came out and said he would donate money to Planned Parenthood if Evil Geniuses revoked their sponsorship of Chris G. after he went on a racist tangent. I thought that was cool of him, and due to that, I thought he was a good dude. I’m hoping I don’t make similar judgement calls in the future.
I’ll miss the site and I enjoyed my time there, but if it comes back I don’t see myself being apart of it.
I was a member on NeoGAF (same name as here) for the past 4-5 years and it was the only website I visited daily. The people on there were mostly amazing and I even used NeoGAF as a part of my Bachelor’s Degree study and planned on using it for my Masters Thesis too, but it seems like I won’t be able to. And to be perfectly honest, I don’t think I want to anymore. Although the allegations are about one person, I still feel that I cannot support, or be a part, of NeoGAF if the allegations are true.
Been through pretty much every GAF iteration, which is a really long time when you come to think of it, but I don’t mind if this is the end of GAF. It had a lot of great ideas and speedy, sprawling discourse, which I will miss, but that just may survive if people carry that to other places. And with as many members as GAF had, I don’t think that will be a problem.
As for the site’s death, if the power it gave the owner kept a victim from speaking out, then it needed to die. It is that simple.
Good riddance to a once really good site that has turned to unreadable trash the past 5-7 years. Gaming side had become so toxic that most of the developers that frequented the site left long ago, and several of them weren’t shy on Twitter posting about why they left. And Tyler admitted that he ordered the mods to cull user accounts that weren’t as far left leaning as he wanted the site to be, which turned Community into a gigantic pathetic echo chamber where any seemingly contrary opinion was dogpiled until the offending user was summarily banned. I regret that I didn’t log in earlier today and request a permanent ban as many others did, but I was away and didnt know this was going on. I’ve known for years what a trash human being Tyler is though. He made that obvious often.
Hi, all. I’ve been visiting NeoGAF (and Gaming Age before it) in some form for about a decade, mostly as a lurker.
First, I want to say that I wish the best for anyone Tyler “Evilore” Malka has ever hurt. I believe the victims and their reports, and my heart goes out to them. I’m glad that Malka’s site will no longer enable him, and that their voices are being heard.
As to the fate of NeoGAF, my thoughts are many. In its current iteration with an abuser like Malka at the head, it clearly needed to go – good on the mods for making that happen. Personally, I had a complicated relationship with the site. I remember, and believed, the 2012 reports and have found Malka a contemptible person since then. In fact, my account’s permanent ban came from Malka when I called out his childish behavior on the forum – which some of his mods and community members were rampant enablers of – and requested he ban me.
Which was a shame, because despite its many faults outside of Tyler – somewhat creepy mod-worship and the inevitable fanboyism, among other issues – the community of GAF itself is one-of-a-kind online. Because of my views on Malka, I tried to find other communities to participate in, but none offered the level of discussion, quick rate of coverage and breadth of topics as the GAF community. Likewise, so many gaming communities are poisoned by alt-right politics and backwards views (even now, you’ll see that tons of news on this topic is coming from alt-right cesspools and GamerGaters celebrating it as a victory against the “SJW” community – which is a whole other essay). It was nice to know that bigotry, sexism, prejudice and the like would get you nowhere fast with the moderators, at least in recent years. I also enjoyed the format of the forum itself, in terms of generating discussion; many of the recurring threads at NeoGAF have no equivalent in the gaming community.
I see some potential good in the aftermath. Most importantly, this is yet another sign that behavior like Malka’s simply will not fly – coming hot off the heels of Weinstein (and an increasing number of reports from women in the gaming industry finally stepping forward), the condemnation of Malka and the loss of his site will hopefully continue to send a clear message to young men that this is not acceptable. As for the community, I hope that they’re able to find a home, and a positive rebirth, elsewhere. I’ll be looking for one, too.
For anyone creating a successor forum, I have name suggestion for you.
Smorgaf.
I know, I know, it’s pretty good.
Hello everyone, another one from gaf here. Gonna miss the neogaf community but there is no way I’d be going back with evilore still around. Been listening to waypoint radio since episode one and following Austin and Patrick since their respective giantbomb days so I have great hopes about a community here.
Another GAF refugee here, long time member since the old Gaming Age days, as much as I’m OK with it dying if it’s for this reason, and I don’t know if I’d go back there if it wasn’t dead under current ownership, I’m going to be pretty sad if it is completely dead and the database is wiped.
I don’t have a massive internet footprint but I always thought “hey you’ve got those thousands of GAF posts, that’s pretty stupid” and I was pretty happy about the idea that all that stuff would be around for me to look back on one day.
Hello there everyone.
My username on GAF was the same as it is here, Temascos. I lurked for a long time and only got an official account on the forums from about 2016 just before E3 that year. I wasn’t too frequent a poster and didn’t keep up too well with internet news but I’m glad the mod team took a stand on this matter and set an example.
Shame, as I had quite a good time reading the posts relating to various bits of news and pointing out great game series like Yakuza, along with the strict moderation which stopped the site becoming a pro-GG hellhole like the other sites I was once a part of
I haven’t been keeping too up to date on Waypoint but I have been enjoying the articles and occassional videos when the time arises for me, and I hope to get along with you peeps here!
I made the Waypoint thread on gaf but it looks like I’ll be spending a bit more time here now instead lol. Pretty sad to see it go, you saw a lot of posts in the few hours it was going down from people saying the site saved their life and helped with their mental illness, and I know that the community threads dedicated to people of colour and LGBTQ folk certainly helped a lot of people feel accepted. It could be shitty at times, but for a forum of its size dedicated to a hobby that is filled with so much toxicity, I think it was remarkably decent.
Wow, that went down fast.
I’ve been a lurker and eternal junior member of GAF since 2012 I think. Honestly sad to see it go, but I’m glad to see there are repercussions for the sexual harassment.
As it is, there’s no way I’m going back to a GAF run by Malka so I’m happy I signed up to Waypoint the day the forum went live, even though I almost never posted and very rarely visited here
Maybe that will change now. I do have mixed feelings about Waypoint becoming my GAF replacement, though. I think it’s great users are so welcoming here, but this is Waypoint after all and I feel like I should keep that in mind instead of treating this forum as a ‘second option’.
Anyhow, good to be here, welcome fellow ex-gaffers and props to the mod team for being open to all the new people!
Well this fucking sucks.
Hi everyone!
I’ve mostly lurked on GAF for the past 4 years or so, though I did post occasionally. Guess I’ll be spending a lot more time here from now on, and hopefully be active on a forum for once instead of mostly lurking. I have enjoyed everything Waypoint has done so far, so it’s nice to have a good place to go to.
I hope that the current trend of exposing this sort of behavior continues, even if it means that a place like GAF gets caught up in it. Still kind of strange to have it go up in flames so quickly, though it was clear something was smoldering for a while.
Either way, I’m happy I get to spend more time here!
If anyone’s looking to reconnect with the former queer and trans communities, there’s two discord groups. A lot of groups on discord have actually stuck together and pulled more people in who were on the site.
Well, it’s going to take a while to get used to the design here.
Still not sure what the hell is going on, and it doesn’t help that the only places/people seemingly having any “info” are openly GamerGaters, which makes all the “info” a bit iffy. No doubt somethings happened though, with mods stepping down and all, and the total silence in respons, or better put the nuking and locking of threads in response, but I’d really like some info from more trustworthy people than Gamergaters.
Also, it puts in to perspective the defensiveness Evilore had when questioned about his soft stance in the Andy Signore/ScreenJunkies thread, that resulted in him going on a banning spree.

Sorry dude, but at this point any info I’ve seen would not be stuff I would post, it’s a lot of hearsay.
There’s a widely available Facebook post, and then there’s a lot of third hand accounts of back room talks.
Which discord server is that? Are you allowed to post a link?
I come from NeoGAF too, where I had the same avatar. Was banned once for playing the devil’s advocate in an Anita Sarkeesian thread, and that taught me a lot, as I saw myself as a feminist by then, but I was showing terrible attitudes.
It’s a shame to see the place go as it was a cornerstone of gaming forums and a very civilized and mostly progressive place, but this is only Evilore’s fault. He was always a petty child, and now it turns out a sexual abuser. His past accusations were muddled by the Gamergate scandal and many thought it was smear by Gamergater scum, but now it seems clear he’s scum as well. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
If GAF ends up dead, I hope this place becomes a worthy main message board for me.
