It looks like NeoGAF is no more

Ah well, at least other places exist.

Been a member there for long enough that I used to get banned for angsty posts and now find it a place (the only place mind you) for reasoned, passionate discourse on video games (and other things like Marvel). For over 6 years now I think about it.

Hugely disappointing, and I doubt now at the age of 24 I’ll find another place like it; everything else seems a little too juvenile. None of my friends or family follow video games to such an extent so think I’m done with it for a while :frowning:

Another GAF refugee. This blows. Thoughts to Evillore’s victims first and foremost. I’m glad we’re far enough along that a lot of communities already had offsite representation, but I’m sure there’s a lot of stuff I’ve missed or people I’ll never find again. I recognise a bunch of peeps here though. GAF has been a part of my online identity for the past decade or so, i suppose - not to an unhealthy extent, but enough that navigating there is going to be a bit of muscle memory I’ll have to fight for a while yet.

GAF generally was one of the nicer communities on the internet and moderated heavily to stay that way for the most part, though it was getting pretty authoritarian near the end of it and the secret moderation shennanigans weren’t super great. And it had a whole bunch of stupid injokes and memes I’ll always remember fondly.

Valē GAF. I hope the spirit I identified with in you lives on.

I remember your username!

I guess the most important (and hugely positive thing) is that people are being exposed everywhere for heinous acts, and that’s what we need to keep in mind.

Been on GAF since 2011. Didn’t really see much of a fall from grace, it just became more and more rigid and predictable.

Although, that might be because my political and ideological views were for the most part aligned with the forum, so I guess I’m not the right person to ask about it becoming worse or better.

Had always read about Evilore and the shit he’d done, but I stayed out of it. Just wanted a place for threads and posts.

Hi all.
As someone who frequently visited Neogaf over the passed 5 years, I feel sick that it was potentially owned by such a morally corrupt person.

It was the first site I ever felt safe enough to post too, the majority people there where super friendly and welcoming and it helped me build my confidence online. It really helped me grow as a person. I’m glad to see that people from the forum can reconnect here, hopefully a similar community can grow with better foundations.

Hello, been lurking on GAF for a year now. My boyfriend introduced me to GAF (in fact he’s on this thread) after our first date so GAF has a special place in our hearts and memories. I was aware it wasn’t perfect but it was a better forum than Reddit. I made my account but GAF blew up before I could activate it.
Its a shame that GAF is no more but if it meant exposing another pervert in power then it was worth it. Waypoint seems like a worthy successor so I’m glad to be here (and glad I don’t have to wait 6 months for an account ).

Hey everyone I’d refrain from posting links to discords for everyone’s safety it’s best not to post that stuff on a public forum.

I wasn’t suggesting people should post hearsay. Just that there’s so much being posted all over, mostly by gamergaters, that it’s really hard to follow. Considering the size and reach of neogaf, I’m guessing Kotaku, Vice/Waypoint, and other more reputable sites will eventually post about it.

I understand. My apologies for asking for discord links.

I’ve been lurking on GAF since 2006 so it’s a shame to see it go. Guess I’ll post here and on GB from now on.

I am absolutely gutted that this has happened. It’s understandable, and I even appreciate the mod team doing what they did to make a stand; I did not expect the actions to be so strong and so swift, and in that sense it’s incredibly admirable.

It still stings, though. It stings because of the many incredibly friendly and passionate communities, but perhaps even more because it’s such a deep contrast to the direction gaming, the internet and the world is taking. This is seen as a glorious victory to the Gamergaters of the world, which to me says a lot about how important it was that it existed. It has nothing to do with leaning left or right, I love me a good debate around traditional left- and right-wing values. But that’s not what I see when I browse Twitter or 4chan or Reddit for reactions to this news; it’s only extremes and short-form hatred.

At its best GAF was long-form, wonderful threads and communities that exuded the best of gaming (though I also enjoyed the madness of people reacting to Nintendo Directs and E3 pressers etc. as they happened). You are wrong, Colin Moriarty: NeoGAF provided so much value to so many people, whether they wanted a great way to see the latest news in gaming, engage with other fans of games, films or other parts of culture. NeoGAF has more than certainly saved lives, and helped people in so many ways; there were communities for those with mental issues, for those who wanted help with relationships or dating, for those who wanted to start exercising and so on. It was not perfect, but it meant a lot for many. Maybe it was for the best that it’s gone considering what’s happened, but it is no cause for celebration.

I hope to find refuge here, and perhaps a few other places, to have actual discussions about games and other stuff without fear of bigotry running rampant. I’ve lurked here for some time and you all seem like lovely people, so I hope you’ll have me.

Yo it was weird as fuck watching the wheels turn towards the ravine so quickly, like how monumental can the death of an internet website be these days huh? It’s like a mass disappearance. I hope for all the best to those who found solace (and those who fought for it) in that community, i’m left with particular worry for some who i’d grown affectionate for. I had some good moments there.

This sucks so bad, in many ways.
I’ve been a (Neo)GAF member since 1999, I’ve had the GAF forums as my browser start page ever since. I used to post a lot more, but have still enjoyed reading NeoGAF on a daily basis throughout the years (admittedly leaning more into the OT side as I’ve gotten older). It was one of the few gaming related boards on the Internet that didn’t tolerate shitty, offensive posts and I can honestly say it has contributed to making me a better person. It had its ups and downs but I loved the place.

In any case, at least I’m glad there are sites like Waypoint around to give me some hope for the future. Been a long-time listener of the podcast, and it has really grown into something great. So I’m happy to be here.

The stupid thing about the fall of NeoGAF is that a good amount of people who are celebrating its end don’t care about the rape allogations at all but do it just because the community didn’t treat people like Colin Moriarty well because, well,… people like him are pathetic…

Hey former Neogaf member 13ruce here, i was a member of Neogaf too but got perm banned due a dumb joke and had a new account pendig for approval. Anyway i lurked since 2010 or 09 and loved the place i finally became a member around 2016 and enjoyed the community forums and the news etc. For that Gaf was a very good place sure aometimes you had super fanboys and craziea but it still was a very nice place for professional game discussion.

Anyway sad to see the place go and i saw some gaffers took refugee here so i signed up i sadly could not get my official avatar anymore but i like this marie and callie one aswell.

You might remember me as the guy who rambled alot about his zelda and splatoon tattoo’s :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway i knew Evilore was kinda a shady guy at times but i stayed and jept lurking for the quick news and good communities after my ban. After i learned about the stuff he did in 2012 i started using adblock.

Anyway hopefully this place ia a nice replacement i have twitter @13rucie and the same name on reddit. I hope this place is a nice home as well and if you still have me as a friend on switch nice! (13rucie).

Sorry for the big first post ever here lol and hopefully this or a new site made by the good members of the gaf community gets build because honestly i can’t keep coming back at the real neogaf with Evilore at helm or a corperate company that buys it out.

Cheers:slight_smile:

Sad to see it go. Thought it a bit weird that the site was down last night but thought nothing of it and then woke up to this.

I joined neogaf (same name and pic) in 2013 or 2014 I think and mostly just lurked on there until the past year.

Gonna miss the community side of things the most for sure.

All the best to everyone else displaced by this.

The notion that gamergate isn’t the most offended and echo-chambered movement on the internet, is ridiculous.

I mean it IS weird how gamergate seems to care about all instances of violence against women except for the ones they’re perpetuating.

@Fudgepuppy Seriously. It’s both sad and amusing to see GG folks celebrate this as if it redeems them in any way.
