It looks like NeoGAF is no more

Also coming from NeoGAF. First of all, very sad for all what happened to the victims. I knew evilore was childish but never knew about the allegations im reading now. I discovered this in the morning after waking up, seeing the site was down, thinking it was a normal thing, but then saw a bunch of alt righters and gamergaters celebrating the death of it (and I thought the just attacked the site), so I started to look for more info until I found the evilore allegations.

I was a GAF member since 2005, my username there was SpacePirate Ridley (same avatar), but know I use everywhere the shorter version of SPRidley. That forum actually helped me find my first job in the industry when we started drawing scribblenaut avatars during that game’s hype E3. I was also part of the tight indie dev community, and other communities, like the theme parks one, or my own OT about Planet Coaster. The community was the best thing about those forums.

Found waypoint today thanks to another GAF member of the indie dev community (Pehesse), and reading this thread and a little more I decided to sign up, as it seems the most similar to that (even if I will have to adjust to the way this forum works with posting and the order of threads). And looking at other forums today, its the only one were you dont find a thread of complete haters celebrating, so thats nice for a change.
Going to keep up her for a while and see how this goes.

Here from neogaf. My forum browsing will never be the same. RIP

GAF isnt a place i wanted to be around, but it had a deep reservoir of knowledge and a lot of interesting knowledge occasionally came out of it. it also seemed to at least be far away more progressive a space than the hell that is reddit and youtube. it rejected the worst elements of games at the very least.

that said i can’t say i have sympathy for the person in charge and im glad he’s seeing the consequences. unfortunate that it means such a large space is going away.

I was a relatively new member to NeoGaf, I mostly lurked for a year or two but had just begun to post regularly, so while I feel the loss, it’s not felt as strongly as some others who have dedicated several years to the place. I will mourn the loss of the community that had been fostered and of the incredible moderation team who didn’t put up with any BS, but even if the site were to magically return tommorow, I wouldn’t rejoin as long as Evilore remains owner of the website, so this is a loss I would have felt even if nothing on the forums themselves had changed (although kudos to the mods/admins stepping down in protest)

A silver lining to this dark cloud is that I discovered Waypoint has their own forums, which is something I wasn’t aware of despite having followed Austin here from Giant Bomb, so at the very least there’s another conversation space to discuss games and the culture around them without having to deal with some of the more unsavory parts of the internet that tend to rise from the depths as soon as video games are mentioned.

I have been on NeoGAF for about 5 years. I lurk more than I post. First, I want to say that if Tyler Malka is the predator that he appears to be, then he should be in jail. But otherwise this situation is pretty sad. NeoGAF is/was an organized community of mostly great thinkers and interesting viewpoints on games. There just isn’t a community quite like it out there.

It was organized, well moderated for the most part, and most of all for me: a fun place to be. Unfortunately, the owner’s behavior cannot/should not be tolerated. My hope is that the site or its members come back in some other form, without Evilore profiting from it. In the interim, I’ll try to find a place to fill that void for me, because the internet feels a little emptier today.

Also a GAF member and am actually really bummed that it turned out like this.

Used to be reading Gaming all the time and then slowly spent more time on OT as I spent less time gaming. I enjoyed the discussions on there will a lot of like minded people and especially in some of the community threads as well.

I’m also here from Neogaf, seems like a decent community here. It’s been a sad day waking up finding it has shut down, but it’s also a chance to try something new.

That there was a mass exodus after the allegations came out is proof that NeoGAF was a quality forum.
Not perfect, but amazing in comparison to many other poisonous gaming social media.

The people celebrating its death are largely gamer gate/alt-right people who hated that the site never allowed their kind of bile.

Agreed. Though from what I’ve seen, this community seems to be pretty cool. I think I may hang around here for a while.

Utterly shocking turn of events.

Say what you will about the strict moderation but it created and fostered an amazing place to discuss videogames. Now, if you’re primary concern was political discourse amongst outraged ubernerds. Then yeah, I understand the resentment towards the “hivemind”. The smart play was to stay the hell out of that nonsense and stick to the good stuff. OT’s, community threads, GAFCinema, Ninty patent speculation, screenshots, shitting on Witcher 3 combat, Driveclub wanking, and much more.

Vita, Dreamcast, The Prestige, Vanquish, Yakuza, Persona, Soulsbourne, Godhand, etc.

GAF had good taste in media. Gonna miss 'em.

Man wtf. GAF has been part of my life for a while now :frowning:

Edit: Also yeah all these people taking easy pot shots now, petty but expected.

Followed patrick and austin from giant bomb, but never joined this forum.

Feel like i’ve lost a home now gaf is gone :frowning: i’ll miss the community threads most, the indie dev thread, eza thread, GB thread…

Hope to enjoy it here, if its as good as the sites content is i’m sure I will

thanks for having me <3

I actually think a decent amount of people tried to call out Tyler for his way of dealing with the Amirox situation, and of course they have been silenced or just ignored. As you can see most of the mods and people just left GAF to find other places on the internet and openly speak out against Tyler.
What you say isn’t the absolute truth imo, as some people do care about shitty behaviors like that and do not accept that.

This is a one-way trip to crazy town.

Do you honestly think that NeoGAF was some sort of port of call for basement dwelling chomos?

Is it really hearsay when the guy himself admitted to sexually assaulting a woman back in 2012 just to “assert dominance”?

Hi there guys and girls! Another refugee here. GAF (then without “Neo”) was one of the first forums I was a member of.

It’s a shame it went down like this. I’m a bit confused by all the hate against the regular Neogaf Community that’s circulating in the social media now…but then again, I only regularly visited the movie, horror and music threads apart from a few topics about game I’m really passionate about.

Some of the political scandals were always a black spot on the site. Not cool that the owner of all people turns out to be a creep.

I for one am going to miss the nice little communities like Horror-GAF.snief

I’ve been lurking here for a while so I guess it’s as good a time as any to register now, eh? Looking forward to good discussions about the different stuff I love. The atmosphere here is not that different from the threads I used to visit.

Dev here from NeoGAF. Glad to see that place burn down and a bunch of other devs are also happy. We hated that place and not for the static they tossed other devs, instead, they didn’t like opinions that differed from theirs.

Good riddance.

I feel like, regardless, there is enough background out there from both testimonies and Evilore’s behavior on the forums to, at the very least, have an informed moral stand. Which is why most of the mods have left, and why you’re seeing so many members following suit.

Well, thanks for the warm welcome.

Can’t say I’m surprised about EviLore but the whole community getting uprooted overnight is pretty disconcerting.

This looks like a new home.

Been reading Neogaf daily for about 12-13 years and a member for 10 O.o

Wake up this morning and this is the first I hear of all the drama! Glad to see a lot of familiar faces here (first time I’ve come across Waypoint too, looking forward to contributing).
