It’s Almost Game of the Year Time, Are You Ready?

I don’t get to play new games very often but I did get to play both Sonic Mania and Hidden Star in Four Seasons this year and loved both. I imagine Sonic Mania’s gonna be talked about even a bit, but I won’t keep my hopes up that anyone at Waypoint is super into Touhou.

I list making arbitrary lists ranking very different games on some scale. This isn’t me being sarcastic there’s something relaxing to me about it. I guess I just like lists.

This year though I feel some short of guilt because my top 6 games of this year would have all probably have been my number 1 for the past couple of years. Also I feel bad because I usually try and find more indie games to play, but I haven’t really done that this year. I’ll probably try to go to Itch.io some more before the year is done and check out some games. Here’s the list as of now.

  1. NieR Automata -
  2. Breath of the Wild
  3. Wolfenstein or Odyssey? - Still need to finish Wolfenstein and need to get my feelings straight on these.
  4. Persona 5
  5. Night in the Woods
  6. Pyre
  7. Prey
  8. Yakuza 0
  9. Butterfly Soup

I also always like the category of favorite game you just played this year and that’s probably Hate Plus.

For me, it’s figuring out everything after my #1. Nier takes that really easily and is already one of my favorite games ever. I could gush forever and ever about how much I adore it. After that things get a lot trickier. I’m stuck between BOTW, Horizon, Night in the Woods and I also still need to play Wolfenstein 2 which I think will end up pretty high.

Those are all such different games though that I enjoyed for such varied reasons that it’s hard to decide. Really leaning towards BOTW for how it redefined how to use exploration as the core gameplay loop of an open world game, but it’s just flawed enough in a couple of ways to force me to think about it. Anyways, awesome year for games! Somebody please give Yoko Taro five years and a pile of money to do whatever he wants.

I will say that to answer the question I am basically ready in that I’ve played all the story based games that I care about this year in order to avoid spoilers. I don’t attach any importance to GOTY rankings other than that it’s fun to hear what other people come up with, so I don’t feel compelled to play every last thing the year it comes out. Having said that RE7, Nier Automata and Persona 5 are really good games

I have never been caught up enough on games to really get involved in GOTY discussions. The closest I’m getting this year to current games is that I’ve played most of the way through Mass Effect Andromeda for a Let’s Play, and I’ve also got Etrian Odyssey V, and I’ve been playing that off and on.

Oh dear, why. Why why why.

I’m still not ready for GotY 2016.

The category of favorite game played this year is always fun and Hate Plus is a great choice. Christine Love is amazing and this reminds me I really need to get to playing Ladykiller in a Bind.

It’s very, very rare for a game to dazzle and captivate me from start to finish. Breath of the Wild was one of those games, and seeing Link run out of the cave as the music crescendoed and the camera revealed all of Hyrule sprawling before me was a feeling unlike anything games have given me in years.

I’m never ready for Game of the Year.

I’m already thinking about what my list will be, though. At this point, I have a few games that are for sure making it on the list (e.g. Pyre, Night In The Woods), but I have no idea what it’s going to look like once it’s finished.

There’s still plenty I’d love to play before the year’s over – Wolfenstein 2, for instance; really need to play that first one too – but at this point, I don’t know if I’ll be able to get anywhere close to playing even a quarter of everything I want to try.

How did you misspell Breath of the Wild so many times?

I mentioned this over in Giant Bomb but here’s my current Top 10 list (of games that I actually played):

  1. Persona 5
  2. Yakuza 0 (both this and above were originally released in 2015 in Japan but stateside in 2017, also the only ones I actually finished…fuck it, they deserve these spots)
  3. NieR: Automata (late to the party and spoiled on at least 30% due to the internet but great so far, if I actually finished this game it might be number 1 but this is all MY OPINION anyways)
  4. Tokyo Dark (a quick little game I kickstarted a couple years ago, but an interesting adventure through the less romanticized aspects of Japan, still need to play the NG+ mode)
  5. Fire Emblem Echoes (Fire Emblem but more JRPG than SRPG with a slightly better story this time around)
  6. LawBreakers (great gameplay, but bad everything else, will probably last another month or two into the new year before tapping out and going F2P, assuming Nexon or Cliffy B lets them)
  7. Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2 (spent so long waiting for Baiken and while she may be #1 in my heart Potemkin is still #1 in my actual gameplay)
  8. Yakuza Kiwami
  9. Tekken 7 (first one out on PC, and did a decent job of it too!)
  10. FF12: The Zodiac Killer

Honorable Mention: Terra Battle 2 (kinda burnt out on mobile gacha games but this one has some real crazy character/Guardian designs, in a fun way)

Dishonorable Mention: Valkyria Revolution (Couldn’t decide if they wanted more musou or more turn-based RPG so we get the worst aspects of both in this franchise spinoff, combined with bosses that are complete damage sponges and AI teammates that are too stupid to avoid the glowing squares where they will die. Not to mention characters I barely remember beyond The Grumpy One, The Drunk One, The Timid One, The Haughty One, The Smart One, and the others. Thanks for destroying the franchise y’all.)

Want to play:

  • Night in the Woods
  • Absolver
  • The Evil Within 2
  • Wolfenstein 2
  • Hellblade
  • Resident Evil 7
  • Nioh
  • Anything good released for the Switch, as I do not own one

I’m actually kinda excited to think about Game of the Year this year mostly because there’s a really nice mix of some super interesting and out there games in addition to the good ole Marios and Zeldos. I admit it’s gonna be weird as heck to have both a main line Mario and Zelda on the same list in the same year since I don’t recall that happening ever.

This year has been so good for games! Yikes. I don’t think I’ll finish all of the worthy entries in time for the end of the year, but I’m starting to make my own list. Definitely Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and Life is Strange: Before the Storm. Probably Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. And yes I know I know probably Breath of the Wild too. I still need to play Tacoma and Edith Finch and Hollow Knight and Night in the Woods and Pyre and…and…

And that’s a lot to play before year’s end. I’ll have to jump in.

I’m so glad to see other people talking about Hellblade in a positive light just because I had some EXTREMELY strong moments playing that game that I wish more people knew about :broken_heart:

Have anyone in the WP crew talked or played Hidden Agenda yet? Its the interactive story game Patrick and Austin played at this years E3 from Supermassive games (The developers of Until Dawn )

So far i only seen youtubers cover this game but no other “major” media say anything about this like IGN. It seems like its going to be another sleeper hit Just like Until Dawn
