Japan - visiting / touring / ethics

So I’m off to Japan this summer for the third time in 3 years.

I’ve learned stuff like - don’t hand money over directly, put it in a tray, and some real basic Japanese, but I’m really interested in how people who have maybe lived there for a while interpret it.!what is Japan? What am I missing?

I went to Japan for a couple weeks in November and just wanted to say how jealous I am you’re going back! I tried my best to learn etiquette beforehand, but definitely had to use my ignorant foreigner card. A good rule is pay attention to what the locals around you are doing or not doing.

We were in Tokyo, Hakone, Kyoto, Osaka and Nara. If you happen to be going to any of those for the first time or something and want recommendations, I’d be happy to share.
