Let's discuss/post/enjoy some metal

So I got to see YOB the other night at a kickass venue in Denver. TRVE Brewing co-sponsored the show, so there was great beer on tap. They were obviously awesome, but they closed with the full 20 minute version of Marrow so it’s been stuck in my head since Tuesday:

Also, this Belgian band called Amenra opened and they were really good too:

I’ve been listening to Crux since you posted about it and I have to say I am absolutely blown away by these guys. I think it might be my favorite album in years. Thanks so much for the recommendation!

It is such a cool, vibrant, exhuberant style of prog that I just never feel like I see in the genre. That album and “Empath” are both just so joyously colorful and I love it.

The guitar work is astounding. It’s so rich and complex that I genuinely thought there were two guitarists until I looked the band up.

Forgot about this release till I looked back at my list of interesting music and realized I had to listen to this again. This is super weird, frenetic extreme prog metal that never uses any harsh vocals. I’ll never get tired of hearing clean vocals against blast beats, especially with the surprising emotion they have on display (kinda funny when you have songs like “Karmaghoul” and “Ghostking”). Definitely worth a listen for the adventurous.

The Moth Gatherer, “The Drone Kingdom” – Esoteric Oppression
Can’t stop thinking about the haunting background vocalizations in this track. I’d listen to a whole album of those vocals in-lieu of the typical metal screaming.

Yo! When the guitars and groove kicks in, that’s so good!

oh boy, that’s the sauce right there. That guitar tone is so thick and the synth/background vocals really adds some delicious textures. the leads also really opens up the song, and like, that is what lead guitars should friggin’ do! It’s supposed to give the song more dimensions and expand on the soundscape they’re trying to convey and it just works so well.

HAIL! HOOTS! GLORYHAMMER HAVE RETURNED

I am so fucking happy right now

Also, this youtube comment really says all anyone needs to know about Gloryhammer:

“Some artists have one good song about love.
This band now has three epic songs about a hammer.”

hey yall, I’m deep into black metal and I recently discovered this band called Dawn Ray’d. They are an explicitly anti fascist, anarchist black metal band from the UK and they kick ass.

I loved The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull, but haven’t followed them much since. I’ll definitely check it out.

Edit: I’m three songs into it, and it’s exactly what I expect Earth to sound like. Which is not a bad thing.

Yeah, this seems more Bees Made Honey and less Earth 2, which is cool with me.

Here’s some black metal from Denver (just moved here so it’s “local”):

A week too late for me, was about to recommend The Moth Gatherer. Such a great album! They remind me a lot of Isis, especially the vocals.

since it’s getting to the end of the year, I wanna shout out my favourite album of the year and one of my favourite albums in a long while, Mordial by Car Bomb.

(CW: flashing lights for this one)

The local metal brewery named a beer after this album and included it on their year end list. Really dug this sound!

Also, I just nabbed tickets to see YOB and Deafheaven in the same weekend. I’m so excited!

I’m convinced that the dude in this band who’s also in Yellow Eyes, Ruin Lust, etc. can do almost no wrong when it comes to stuff he’s in. His Vilkacis project’s full-length is one of my favorite black metal albums as of late:

I’ve been listening to this album a lot over the past week or so and I think I might’ve already found my album of the year, definitely recommend it to anyone, but especially to fans of Deftones.

I came for the album art (badass demon biker surrounded by 4 portraits of surprised birds? What??? I love it), and stayed for the great mix of sludgey doom and synth! Not a common combination, especially with the synth at the forefront at almost all times, but they make it work real damn well. And the album’s name-your-price!!!
