I was hoping it was going to be like, “Here’s about 10 minutes to bridge the gap and now we return you to your regularly scheduled programming” and was caught off-guard when it was a whole episode. I’m also pretty invested in Boba Fett’s story, despite the show basically leaving it all up to Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen to make it work at all, and I feel like it’s some kind of triple secret violation of the MST3K Rule to interrupt the show that reminds you of the better show by just dropping in an episode of the better show
Great episode, love that Amy Sedaris gets so much screentime. Agree that it felt wierd to basically put an episode of another show into this one, doubley so because it was so much better.
Re: Boba Fetts motivation to be a crime lord, I still find it murky. Doesnt help that being a crime lord in the star wars universe is a vague concept, though I image there is fiction that delves into it.
But do i want this technical episode of star wars where they go into the nuts and bolts of running a sci fi crime empire like Scorsese explaining how a Casino is run from the ground up?
Maybe. That would be kind of cool.
So, I have a buddy I regularly chat with after films/TV/etc and I messaged him after this episode: “Seen the latest Boba Fett?” He replied: “no, but I caught the first episode of Season 3 of the Mandalorian”.
It’s a really fun episode, but I’m echoing a feeling it seems a few others have here of actually getting invested in the Boba Fett arc - despite its flaws - and finding it jarring to spend an entire episode following another character. In any event, I can only judge what they put in front of me, and there was a bunch of good stuff here: I love that they’re leaning into Mando’s sect of Mandalorians being a psychotic cult of extremists (“There’s only three of us, but let’s duel in a way that could result in both our deaths. Oh you took your helmet off? You’re out of the club anyway.”); I really liked the ship-building scene, even if I was yelling “That’s a Jedi Starfighter!” only for Amy Sedaris to gently correct me that it was a Naboo Starfighter; and I loved seeing the BD-model droid and wondering… is that the same model of droid as in Jedi: Fallen Order, or the same actual droid?
I know EA have recently announced that Respawn are working on three new star wars games. One of them has to be Fallen Order 2. But I think the license is moving houses after? Could Fallen Order 2 be the last game of the series!? (probably not) Does Cal find a new home for BD. I guess there’s a few years between when fallen order 2 will happen (presumably before New Hope) and when this episode of Mando takes place. I’m absolutely stumped about what could bring Cal Kestus to Tatooine prior to New Hope…
I don’t remember most of the episode titles but Twilight of the Apprentice and Twin Suns should be front and centre for two of the best Star Wars moments of all time (IMO).
If I’ve understood the game licensing situation correctly, EA’s exclusive licence to develop Star Wars games has already expired, but there’s nothing stopping an on-going relationship with Disney for future games in the sense of “oh, now Ubisoft/Sony/Microsoft [delete as applicable] is the new licensee so EA can’t create anything”. So whether there’s a Fallen Order 3 or not is probably more about either the success of that sequel or their desire to further that story/series.
As the exclusive license with EA came to an end, Disney collected the various Lucasfilm properties (Star Wars and Indiana Jones) into one “Lucasfilm Games” group like they did with their Marvel Games group. Marvel basically takes a lap around the games industry and says “Who wants to make a Marvel game?” and then they embed with a studio to help get the story and the art coherent and whatnot.
So a Fallen Order 3 is certainly in the realm of possibility (honestly hoping that this is a thing Respawn wants to do and not that some executive at EA stuck their nose in), but you could also get a Naughty Dog Dash Rendar game, a Red Storm (the Rainbow Six people) Republic Commando game, and a Hearthstone-style CCG from yet another studio.
Very minor note, but Red Storm haven’t been the Rainbow Six people for a long time. At this point, they’re mainly a Ubisoft support studio - I don’t think they led development on any games since the 360/PS3-era Ghost Recon games. The Rainbow Six team is one of many, many teams housed within Ubisoft Montreal.
Oh. RIP Red Storm. They were my last point-of-reference for that franchise. I think I still have a Ghost Recon: Future Soldier shirt their CM sent me.
I think Future Soldier was the last Clancy game they led development on. Everything else (at least according to Wikipedia), they’re just listed as “additional work”. That, and a couple of VR games (Bridge Crew and Werewolves Within).
This is where I’m coming down on it as well. Don’t get me wrong, Mando is great, and I enjoy spending time with him - but hey, this is a Boba Fett show - I want to see what happens next in that storyline!
Definitely fun, but part of what I’ve liked about the show so far is that it never seems to linger too long in one area (whether a flashback or the current Boba Fett situation). It keeps things moving. And now we get a full episode that just puts everything on hold - this really felt more like a Mandalorian Season 3 teaser than an episode of the show we’ve been watching for the past month.
Definitely zero doubt that when it comes to Star Wars TV now that Bryce Dallas Howard should be direcring more of these than Robert Rodriguez.
Regarding the Darksaber, IIRC there was some technobabble reason for it being more unwieldy because the all beskar components causes the crystal/beam to behave very differently from a typical jedi-made lightsaber.
I’m glad we got what looks like Grogu armor, ensuring Grogu will be the sole student to survive the Ben Solo massacre
I’m still rather upset that Boba Fett is barely in his own show at this point but GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY THE FAN SERVICE
The fan service is off the fucking charts!!! On one hand I’m super bummed that a show about Boba Fett has a decent chunk of it not focused on him. But on the other hand… fill me to the fucking brim with all the fan service you can possibly imagine! It makes me wonder if the show will be a one of thing though. It was just something they made to fill the gap between Mando season 2 and 3 opposed to having a story they really wanted to tell. I can see it going both ways. If they do continue on with it I hope they focus on Boba. Drop all the Mando stuff. Let Boba and his pose/crime organization shine!
Also holy shit Cad Bane!!! Maybe it was because he wasn’t animated in a kids’ show, but he was legit menacing/scary. I got the vibe of the ruthless bounty hunter that the Clone Wars made him out to be, but never really accomplished in the show in my opinion. At this point I’m kinda surprised we haven’t seen Bosk, Dengar, or any of the bounty hunter crew from Empire, and would be even more surprised if we didn’t see any of them at all once it’s all said and done.
Me: I sense Dave Filoni’s presence.

Tired: Boba Fett riding a rancor in the season finale
Wired: Boba Fett vs. Cad Bane in the season finale
Yeah, I don’t have much to add to others thoughts - other than that clearly by this point in his time, Luke hasn’t learned the important lesson of why the Jedi Order failed - forcing a kid to choose between attachment and non-attachment with incredibly long-term consequences is exactly how you get Anakin Skywalkers.
Honestly, when the AMCA crew gets to their Boba Fett episode, I’m going to fork over my $5 just for that one episode just because of today’s installment
The most “directed by Dave Filoni” possible episode? As I put it on Twitter, I’m not sure if this was good television, but I was yelling excitedly every few minutes.
Dave Filoni has zero self-control in a way I completely understand but think can get a little ridiculous. He always has to take all of the toys out of the toybox, so to speak. Star Wars is a big place. Bigger than the MCU. Like in high school, I was happy to hang out with my soccer teammates but I’m not inviting them to the LAN party.
