Let's talk Playstation 5! (Play5tation?)

Stray is next year, sadly.

I think 47 is infiltrating the Burj Khalifa in particular. But yes: hell yeah.

Hitman 3 is gonna hit the spot. Little Devil Inside and Jett looks very interesting. Nice to see them putting some family friendly games like Sackboy, Bugsnax and Astrobot on this. It really wasn’t heavy shooter, that’s refreshing.

Speaking of, I’m a big fan of Arkane but I’m not that excited about a game from them that is more about shooting than skulking about. But I’m sure it will be good.

Demon’s Souls, I haven’t played it, I could certainly consider doing that. But graphics aside, it’s gonna be very strange to play a Souls game from a developer that isn’t Fromsoft. They walk a fine line between jank and precision, and I have feeling this will be very polished. But I look forward to seeing more.

And can we just say, isn’t it just so nice to not have to sit through awkward E3 shows just to get some trailers?

Please let me turn the lights off
Please let me turn the lights off
Please let me turn the lights off

The PS4 controller’s lights already make my chronic headaches worse (and reflect off my TV) dissuading me from playing on PS4 a lot of the time. I’ve dimmed them as much as possible but you can’t turn the damn light off. Now the PS5 controller has lights on top towards my eyes and the console has pointless lights too. I absolutely hate having to cause myself physical pain to play Sony games.

As for the games, I was mostly impressed and look forward to seeing more. Were the people talking between trailers CG though? Did they put on some weird filter to mask how they were probably not filmed in the same place? What was up with that?

Yeah, definitely, the light on top of the PS4 controller is the source of at least forty migraines I’ve had in the past four years. I don’t need the console itself to be a beaon of LEDs. I like some of the other elements of the design (even the ridiculous fins don’t bother me), but I could do without that.

I have no intentions of buying a ps5 at launch but I am beyond excited for Spider-Man, Kena and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Also…I know it is off topic but I do not see the colonist themes in Horizon could someone point me to a thread or article so I could learn more. It has been several years since I have played the game so I may have missed or forgotten it.

the thing with HZD that I think about is Dia Lacina’s short medium article from back in 2017 about Native American representation in games generally, using Horizon as its primary example / jumping off point for the discussion.

Her major crit revolves around the games use of specific terms, and it’s world building being praised critically and advertised as being “unique” while also appropriating indigenous iconography and belief systems, implying that the iconography and belief systems are “old” or “outdated” while still being alive today in indigenous communities. It reads as extremely disingenuous on Guerrilla’s part when they say that the similarities either don’t matter or were unintentional.

This, paired with HZD2’s theme of “discovering the West” (which still is explicitly something colonizers say when referring to the continued colonization of what is now North America) is extremely off base and, again, just reads as totally disingenuous compared to the supposed progressivism in other aspects of the game’s plot.

Edit: This isn’t to say that there aren’t things to like about HZD, or that its objectively bad or something. I think that what Dia was calling for in 2017 was for Guerrilla and games crit to be more aware of what they’re using to tell their stories and what they’re praising, respectively. It’s just frustrating they didn’t listen.

She wrote an article making fun of bad Rule 34, but originally it included several images of Harry Potter and Pokemon characters. Needless to say, people immediately went ‘uhh what the hell?’ and the images were removed. But you can still read the article on Kotaku, “Animated Video Game Porn Could Be A Lot Sexier And Less Gross” (I’m not going to link it) along with the editor’s note and the original comments.

So I’m hesitant to play a game she wrote about high school students, you know?

I looked it up immediately since I’d been so excited for the game and yeah it’s really gross and bad.

If only there were other games with unique art and gameplay styles exploring teen stories and gender feelings. If only there were dozens of games like that one could play right now while also supporting organizations doing legitimately important work.

In regards to Demon’s Souls, I don’t get the complaints. The original designs were uninspired fantasy stuff that may have resulted in a special atmosphere and later nostalgia for some, because of the garbage textures and lighting (like a lot of old games). The new one looks more like the Demon’s Souls they wanted to make tbh and yeah the glossy look of everything bothers me a bit, but otherwise? I have no problems with a general critique of Demon’s Souls aesthetics, but that has to feature the original first, I think.

I have fond memories of Ratchet & Clank, except the last ones, so we’ll see how this one turns out. Resident Evil 8 and Deathloop look awesome and my biggest gameplay question for Horizon 2 is if they went back to the drawing board and threw out the Ubisoft game design. I don’t just want an expanded Horizon Zero Dawn. In terms of story, it will be interesting to see if they take the easy route and just create some new mystery of the “old ones”, whose answer lies in the past or if they take the more difficult route (and imo the more interesting) and actually attempt to write a narrative centered on the contemporary world the game takes place in.

The most interesting games were some of the indies, though (I want Little Devil Inside and Stray!!!)

All I want to know is: can you put the PS5 horizontally? Because I have no space for a tall standing console. Also, if you imagine the console with the white plastic removed, it looks quite smooth imo. Now it looks a bit too “curvy” for my tastes, which is why I ask if it can be put horizontally, but whatever.
EDIT: Oh, thank God: https://i.imgur.com/aevVcvt.jpg and https://i.imgur.com/MXvzZRE.jpg

Also, I think we can assume that they made two models because of the price. I’m guessing, at best, the digital version will be 399 and the disc version will be 499.

I had a thought about the design this morning. What if the white plastic is removable and you can get different replacement design? Generation remix is back baybee!

I understand why the disc version would be more expensive, but that would be kinda effed up. A lot of people who haven’t switched to digital buy discs because they don’t have great internet and can use trade ins to pay for new games. It’s not great to charge disadvantaged people more.

My hope is that the disc version has a smaller SDD so they can charge the same or maybe even less for it, but that’s probably a pipe dream.

Considering how even the weird 800ish GB size of the SSD was touted as essential to the system, I doubt this will be the case. The disk drive is for loading to the SSD once and nothing but authentication after that, so it won’t really save any space on the hard drive.

Ratchet and Clank went through an experimental phase where Insomniac was trying some stuff out and it…didn’t really work. Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus and the 2016 reimagining/remake of the original game are both very classic R&C though.

I think Insomniac settled into a good rhythm where every 3-5 years folks think “I could really go for a Ratchet and Clank game” and then Insomniac delivers.

I’m very glad that Insomniac are still getting to make Ratchet & Clank games in addition to Spider-Man. I’ve given up hope of Jak or Sly ever coming back in a meaningful way, but at least we still have this series.

Great range of platformers on here. Letting Sumo Digital do a straightforward 3D platformer with Sackboy sounds like it could be excellent, I doubt it’ll include any sort of level-building since Dreams blew the door wide open on that component of the original games, but I appreciate that the visual design still incorporates little details everywhere that look like they were made in the level designer.

If I had to guess the all-digital version was developed late once Sony realized that the PS5 was going to hit a higher price point than they would have liked. So it’s easier to take a hit on a digital console because they can make it up on the back end by taking a larger share of software sales through PSN. It sucks for those without great internet, but I think the only alternative would be for them to release a higher cost PS5, which would also suck. Not great options all around.

I suppose the good news is that despite the rhetoric about generations, third parties are signaling ongoing PS4 support for the next few years. So there’s time to wait for the price drop to go next gen.

I’m curious, which one will you be buying?

  • With Disc Drive
  • Without Disc Drive

It’s ultimately going to come down to how much of a discount I’m getting to eschew the hard drive, but I’m lucky enough to have the Good Internet as well as live in a place where PSN doesn’t charge the typical 13% sales tax, so digital is a no-brainer for me.
