Microsoft - E3 2019 Official Thread

Tales is doing that JRPG thing where they make it look next-gen right before the next next-gen comes out but also I don’t care because that game looks great. I wonder if they’re using Unreal for this one as well? Namco seems to have shifted to that for their anime-style stuff in a post-Guilty Gear Xrd world.

Upgrading to the new subscription tier is a little confusing, but from what I can tell, if you have any months of XBL Gold and Xbox Game Pass, then upgrade to the ultimate tier, it’ll add all those months together and put you at the highest tier for no additional cost(??).

They clearly want people in this new pricey tier, but at least the way they’re handling upgrades is surprisingly generous.

Elden Ring seems to be getting at the idea of ”bodies as tools”, not in the transhumanist way but more in the “religious/political institutions will exploit lives and labour and discard them without a second thought“. It’s been a consistent theme throughout all From’s games at least starting with Demon’s Souls, but it looks like they’ve taken the fresh setting as an opportunity to incorporate those concepts closely into worldbuilding and character design. The ringsmiths are breaking apart like dried clay as they work, arms are manipulating other arms like puppets, and on the website there’s concept art of a character wearing someone’s skin as a cloak.

The red-haired knight’s got some nonsense going on with both arms: one’s prosthetic and the other is covered in golden scales and grey lumps that look like a bit iron ore or smithing coke. There’s multiple shots within the trailer where it’s difficult to tell which parts exactly are flesh and blood and which ones are synthetic material.

I know we were holding out for gameplay but c’mon, this shit’s cool!

Finally watched this whole thing.

  • I’d love for Outer Worlds to be great, but I don’t see any reason to have a ton of faith right now tbh

  • Really wasn’t expecting singleplayer Gears of War to seem more legitimately intriguing than the CDPR game, but here we are. Keanu barely redeemed that.

  • Bleeding Edge could be fun, it looked like a nightmare.

  • Ori & The Will of the Wisps will probably leave me inconsolable. Should I play the first?

  • That happy bouncing raccoon made me mark the hell out. I want to play Spiritfarer, like, yesterday

  • Of all the ID @ Xbox stuff, Unto the End and Night Call most caught my eye. I have no idea what they are, but I’ll definitely look into them

  • Give me three “ehhhhhh’s” for monopolization!

  • Seriously, that was a weird Gears trailer and I’m INTO IT. A t-800 holding a Lancer is maybe the funniest image ever? And what happened to the wrestlers? Are they still trapped down there?

  • Those elite controllers look pretty snazzy, but it’s still no Duke, what else is, really?

  • Bring back Rocket Racer, that would be super cool

  • Miyazaki and GRRM is such a novel combo and I can’t wait to hear more about Elden Ring

  • I’m 100% maining the beastmaster in BL3

  • I don’t know anything about tech, so I’ll just assume that Scarlett is super duper powerful

I thought it was a decent showing overall. Seemed like Microsoft took pretty great advantage of being the only console manufacturer to not only show up, but also not just play a video

I think the Microsoft Conference was mostly fine. It was absolutely laden with games like last year which feels good. There’s a lot of good stuff here from big releases to smaller games. Since getting a One X - the Xbox is my preferred mode of gaming especially with Games Pass - whilst PS4 is getting used mainly for VR.

  • Outer Worlds looks cool but can’t shake the Fallout in Space feeling.
  • Thought Blair Witch was going to be Outlast 3 or Resident Evil 8. When it was revealed to be Blair Witch I had to go to twitter to see Patrick’s reaction. Was not disappointed.
  • Keanu Reeves in Cyberpunk 2077 is perfect. Immediately hyped for this game now. Best moment of E3 yet.
  • New From Software game looks as if they’re delving into more Germanic fantasy again? With Bloodborne esque dolls. I guess this will be out in Spring 2021.
  • Halo trailer was fine, I’m not sure if we got a glimpse of what the game actually looks like from Master Chief’s helmet. The design of Master Chief looked a lot plainer and more green than Halo V - wonder if they are going back to basics. With it being set on a new Halo, it seems like it could be a soft reboot.

Also 100% down with Spiritfarer so far (and thankfully it’s coming out on Switch.)

So I’m listening to them on periscope right now and talking about Halo and if you want to see some bad fanfic, half of Swift on Security is Cortana taking over the world fanfic. More importantly, I went and read the wiki and dont worry it all lines up fine. Like all the best halo lore, it’s in one of the novels.

Everybody should play Ori 1. And if you have, play it again.

Any tips for sticking with it? I put like two hours into it earlier this year and basically went “yup, this sure is a metroidvania” and promptly never played it again. Is it just the visuals and music that set it apart or is there something else I was missing?

Get to the first “boss” fight at least. It’s incredible.

Also I really like Metroidvanias so I don’t really have a tip. It’s like asking me how to enjoy a JRPG, I don’t know, I just do.

Void Bastards being on there is great. Happy to try it out for $1!

Very excited for the new Tales game that was shown briefly.

There’s two big things besides the presentation that made me enjoy Ori as much as I did. One’s the focus on tricky platforming where most other games in the genre emphasize combat; Meat Boy Metroidvania was a chocolate-and-peanut-butter moment for me. The other is the “bash” ability you get I think about half-way through, which quickly becomes the game’s dominant mechanic. It lets you grab just about any sprite, whether it’s a dedicated fling point, an enemy or a projectile, then hold a direction and let go: Ori flies one way, the object the other. It opens up a ton of possibilities for fancy mid-air acrobatics and extended platforming sequences where you never touch the ground.

There should a highlander style battle between video game Phil’s to see who gets to make game streaming a thing

Some post-show news: the last wave of backwards compatibility titles on the XB1 have been listed, as well as the last wave of XBX enhanced titles, which are entirely comprised of Rare’s 3D games.

Work on this will continue for the next-gen console, but for now, they’re done with XB1. They’ll be giving away Too Human for free due to the legal issues it’s wrapped up in.

There were a few games I would have liked to see get the enhancement treatment (Prince of Persia 2008 would have been a great pick IMO), but Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts was easily my top pick. It looks fantastic with the upgrade!
