Ontario Provincial Election 2018 Thread

EDIT: Looking at the CBC’s live updates and not surprised but intensely disappointed that a lot of Liberal incumbents are being beat out by the PC’s. Who coulda thunk that the middle of the road status quo people would skew right when things really got down to it? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I hadn’t been following this election at all (I’m not Canadian) and Jesus Christ that’s some extremely blatant transphobia from Ford.

Things like this shithead getting elected make me hate the world almost as much as it hates me.

In a debate he also equated the ideology of NDP and Liberal voters, who he referred to with the blanket word “activists” (for reference the NDP is probably the closest thing we have to a popular leftist party, through I think sometimes that’s stretching it. The Liberal Party are your traditional middle of the road neo-liberals. I digress) to that of the Nazi Party and Adolf Hitler.

That and his transphobic statements should give you some idea of who we’re dealing with.

Feel like I’m going to have a hard time being surprised when some vote demographics get released.

Dear Canadian friends, so sorry about tonight. Another Ford in power… the world blows. Cracking open a bag of all dressed chips, blasting some Sloan and murdering some pixelated nazis via Wolfenstein, thinking of you tonight.

Love,

You are in my thoughts tonight, Ontario peeps.

Personally this significantly lowers the number of places I want to be in this country to start my career now, but that’s nothing as compared to the suffering that man will inflict on the people of the province.

So how long until some of the people in Ford’s base (or, more likely, some of the swing votes he picked up) pull the “this isn’t what we were promised at all!” card?

I’d like to say the second his butt hits the chair at Queen’s Park, but let’s be honest, the Toronto Sun will keep spinning his incompetent tenure with bald-faced lies and Ford nation will keep trucking along (while rolling coal, because fuck nature, which is probably a lib).

I’m not going to downplay the damage Ford can and almost certainly will do. His policies WILL hurt people. He WILL make a mockery of the province. But to those that are despondent about last night I can attempt to lay out how it could be worse.

We should really be starting the third term of a conservative dynasty right now. It’s a complete shock the Liberals pulled off the last election, and really the election before that. The Ontario conservatives still (despite last night) have a track record of the last twenty years of completely proving themselves incompetent at getting and holding support. The Liberals were on borrowed time and to some extent we should be thankful we’re not deep into Premier Hudak era.

Ford is also he most beatable leader the cons could offer. Ontario usually gives parties several terms of governing in a row beforehand switching but Ford has enough built in antimosity to lose at any point. The cons ruled for almost sixty years with only one term of break before the Liberals took their twenty. There’s a very real (likely even imo) that Ford could botch their long term window by being a disaster. The pendulum of power is always in motion and if it swings towards the cons for one term between 1999 and say 2035ish I think we’re doing pretty good.

But yes, this one term will suck. I don’t want to take anything away from that.

It’s true. Another silver lining was that the NDP did see a surge in support. They’ve positioned themselves as a viable alternative to the Liberals. I know my dad in the 905 couldn’t see the NDP outdoing the Liberals so he voted Liberal as his strategic pick, but in his riding the NDP came in second to the PCs. I feel less people are going to be voting Liberals instead of NDP strategically.

This term will make things worse but at least this time the PC guy is visibly incompetent.
