I’m here for both of these comments.
And another one I missed, no Godzilla for VFX!
I can accept being in the minority of people who enjoyed that film, but the digital effects of the monsters were phenomenal. They wring so much characterization out of these giant animals that have zero spoken dialogue. I mean, Ghidorah’s three heads have different, clearly defined, personalities! How cool is that?!
And as for the fuck up list, The Lighthouse was nominated for an award, cinematography, which it deserves. It wasn’t completely locked out. Though, if I’m being honest with myself, it probably only earned that nomination because of the unique aspect ratio. It’s really gonna drive me nuts if Roger Deakins wins for an obnoxious “one-er” movie
We just need to take the games journalism model of “of the Year” and have hundreds of publications pick theirs and we forget about it all a week later.
I only let myself care about one category at the Oscars - Animated Feature - because I’ll tire myself out if I care about all their other bad calls. In that limited scope, it’s an okay list.
Disney only received one nomination, and I’ll hope next year to see that down to zero. Laika was nominated for their worst film, but their animation is still top-notch and deserves a nod. I Lost my Body wasn’t my favourite foreign animated film, but it’s a treat to see a lesser known work on the list. Klaus is the best thing to come from Sergio Pablos, and my choice for winner. HTTYD3… is also a nominee.
As for snubs, it is certainly surprising Promare wasn’t nominated. It was the most talked-about animated film outside of the major American studios. Children of the Sea was another anime film I thought could contend. Another Day of Life, Rezo, The Swallows of Kabul, and This Magnificent Cake! all looked like they could be good, but none of them released within a reasonable distance of me, so I can’t judge 'em.
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a Pixar film so quickly vanish from public consciousness as Toy Story 4, so it’ll suck when it inevitably wins
Oh shit, right, Animated Feature.
Klaus needs to win that or there is no justice in the world.
Good to see Hair Love get the nod in Animated Short.
Toy Story 4, despite being very good, just isn’t Toy Story good.
It feels like the best direct-to-video sequel ever made.
I always say this with each year but… The Oscars, Baftas and Golden Globes are campaigned by the big studios HARD. A nomination let alone a win is going to be good for ticket/dvd sales. Studios will do private screenings at the houses of academy members, sometimes the actors will appear to meet everyone afterwards. They’re campaigning for the illusion of prestige. And hey if you want to make a sequel or a larger cinematic franchise from your oscar winning comic book movie. That’ll probably help too…
But with all that said.
Think Phoenix will win best actor, he’s been better in other movies (everybody who thinks Joker is the best thing should watch You Were Never Really Here). Think it might be Tarantino’s year for best director - since Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is all loved up on old and new school Hollywood. But then, if he is only going to make one more film before retiring, they might save it for that - as that’ll be up for Oscars as well. Wouldn’t be surprised to see ScarJo win the Oscar just as Black Widow is about to come out. Brad Pitt will get best supporting actor.
Love to see Parasite and Bong Joon Ho win. I’ve loved all his weird films - The Host is such a great monster movie and Okja and Snowpiercer were really cool. I’d be happy if Adam Driver wins but y’know he’ll be great (and better) in more films. Kind of want to see Laura Dern win best supporting actress, just because she is great in everything and y’know restored power back to Jurassic Park all those years ago.
Also come on Rian Johnson for best screenplay.
It’s all shit though. Oscars are shit.
How the heck does Bohemian Rhapsody gain more acclaim that Rocketman? Do they even watch movies?
Joker being a critical hit is so baffling to me. As is Uncut Gems being completely shut out.
JLO DESERVES BETTER
Little Women has a rich emotional texture. It got me in the heart. I would be happy to see it clean up.
The Joker is going to be playing near me in 70 mm dare I go? A life long love of Batman makes me a bit curious. I hate the tone and the self importance but maybe that’s unfair to say without seeing it.
Dang Sandler and KG have both been snubbed. It might sound weird to praise KG but one of the most important scenes hinges on his ability to match Sandler’s energy and he delivers.
I am a bit personally disappointed that Detective Pikachu got no nominations. Those fx were dope!!
my thing with joker is: it’s a movie i’m gonna wait until it’s on a service i’m subbed to ,or watch at a friends place. just based on everything about todd phillips i don’t want any of my money going to him. people might say it’s too late because it already made over a billion dollars. but i’m still not giving him money.
also YEAH Jennifer Lopez knocked it out of the park in Hustlers. that fact she’s being snubbed… academy don’t know shit.
Because 1917 has, apparently, emerged as the front-runner, I thought I would hop in here to let ya’ll know that it’s trash.
i have seen the joker now: my opinion on phoenix and phillips still stand
I honestly feel the same about talented people winning for bad art when it comes to Mendes and Deakins and 1917.
I think they should’ve won back in 2013 for Skyfall, but I’d hate it if this was the film they recouped that loss with.
Joker is just not a good movie. Phoenix’s performance can’t elevate it above the directionless self-sabotaging mess of a script and shoddy directorial decision making.
The fact that it’s getting anything more than a best actor nod is just sad. I don’t get the Academy at all.
They’re white, rich, old, crotchety, racist, and can’t help but continuously make the case for their own irrelevancy.
Me watching 1917: these are some cool ass video game levels!
When the camera glides through no-man’s land, elegantly showing us every piece of rubble, every corpse, every awful cgi rat, I was reminded of the time a war photographer was shown stills from The Last of Us and they were like “Shit looks fake, bro”
And, oh my god, all of the interminable shots of the two characters looking out over vistas, it was soooooooo bad.
It felt stunningly amateurish for the guy who dp’d this
1917 is an awful, awful, movie. Undoubtedly the worst best picture nominee. Joker has definite problems, Marriage Story is overhyped, and Jojo Rabbit does sound like a profound letdown for fans of Waititi, but they ain’t got nothing on this
I’ll hop in here and I say I absolutely loved 1917. Like, comparing it to a video game won’t hurt me since I think Sony-style prestige games that look like look great and have a solid film language. Following the characters crawling through no-man’s land is intense and paranoid. The shot of the village lit by flares is the most beautiful image I saw in a movie from 2019. I think even the two leads are doing great acting work.
It seems like there’s always a back-lash against these long-take (or long-take simulated, since this was all composited after the fact in editing) movies. I really liked Birdman, I had issues with the Revenant but liked that, and love Gravity to death. It is something of a gimmick and the effect doesn’t last, but as a cinematic experience, it’s incredible and visceral in a way that other styles do not replicate.
Now if you wanna dunk on a bland movie for old people, go with Ford v Ferrari.
Crash.
I mean we should have known the oscars were worthless after that, Green Book was just a reminder.
