[PODCAST Waypoints 42] 'The Mandalorian' Is a Better Future for Star Wars Than 'Rise of Skywalker'

Star Wars, at least in the mainstream, has always been a movie franchise first. In the early aughts we started to see more and more animated series, but now, for the first time, there is both a live action TV series and a movie that released within the same general time frame. Having these two visually and tonally similar works to contrast has helped the Waypoint Radio crew really dial in what they like and dislike about Star Wars as a whole. On this episode of Waypoints, we share our thoughts on both The Rise of Skywalker and The Mandalorian, Star Wars as a franchise, and one weird thing that happened on Patrick's twitter feed. You can read an excerpt and listen to the full episode below.

I mean, it’s self-obsessed continuity porn either way, so this seems like a “whoever wins, we lose” situation if you ask me.

I misheard the Ugnaught discussion and thought they were saying that he was played by McNulty from The Wire. I imagine that would have been a bit different.

Quick question that googling couldn’t solve: what is the Remember Back to the Future song that Austin talks about? Something related to Ready Player One?

re: Patrick’s love of what a dink the Mandalorian is, and The Witcher. The book Geralt does this a lot of the time. He’s not nearly the badass that game Geralt is. He’ll kill a monster or a bunch of dudes, and get real fucked up in the process, then be on bed rest for months. It’s great and I love it.

So my theory on why not just storm that bar is Baby Yoda fucked up that flametrooper. They don’t know what Baby Yoda can do but they are very cautious about it and they wanted them taken alive… Also one of my biggest hurdles on thinking and writing any fanfic for a “real” sequel to the last jedi is because I have no grasp on the time tables.
