Into the Breach is on Switch if you haven’t played it yet.
Ah, thank you, didn’t read carefully enough about your back. Oxenfree isn’t very long so it might not be able to get you through a few days if you’re playing nothing else.
i played the pokémon mystery dungeon dx demo yesterday and got a good impression from it, even if there isn’t a lot going on that early in the game, and it has me wanting a whole mystery dungeon game to play on my switch. however, i don’t really want to drop sixty u.s. dollars on it, so i’ve been looking a bit at what other mystery dungeons are out there, in particular for one that will be at least a little more demanding. i’ve come up with a couple others, but i’m wondering which is the way to go.
so:
dragonfangz? looting monster skills seems cool, and the idea of having to play dangerously to use your full power is intriguing. i did try a bit of dragonfang (not z) today since i heard that’s a decent alternative to a demo, and i feel like based on that, this might be the best fit for me. however, the translation… i also hear it is a bit short?
touhou gensou wanderer reloaded? i like the pc having a complete toolbox of spells to start, and i like the price (it’s currently on sale) - except for the part where apparently there’s like $40 in extra playable characters. the environments are really drab…
bite the bullet and stick with pokémon mystery dungeon dx? i really liked what i got to see of it, but the demo ended without me ever feeling like i needed to do things like link moves or conserve pp. i picked up a decent number of items, and only ever used one. well, i suppose my teammate did throw all of the gravelerocks i picked up the one time. does it actually become a bit challenging at some point?
something else?
I can’t speak to the others, but having played through Rescue Team DX (as well as every other PMD game) I can say that it didn’t feel particularly challenging until the postgame, and that the start of the postgame came with a huge difficulty spike that suddenly required linking moves and careful team construction and item use in a way it hadn’t before. In a sense that’s sort of intended — the main story almost feels like a tutorial for the real game of dungeon crawling and grinding and collecting that happens afterwards, but it’s not a small amount to get through (20-25 hours iirc), and the postgame doesn’t have much of a narrative driving it if that’s something you need.
(edit: …lol I did not realize it had been three months, this thread just appeared at the top of my feed for some reason?? apologies for the random necro that’s almost definitely no longer useful.)
(Usually this means a spam post was posted and deleted.)
Hearing Austin talk about Trash the Planet on Waypoint episode 382 made me long for narrative-driven (slash text-heavy) indie games of a few hours gaming time maximum. What can you think of? Do you have any recommendations?
Bonus points if it’s free to play. I am aware of the (slighly dated) Visual Novel Recommendation thread but happily accept newer/other recommendations. (And, of course, game recommendations that aren’t visual novels.)
Thanks a lot!
If you’re looking for something light-hearted but meaningful, you could look into the catalogs of npckc and Nami. Lots of very good games in there, short and to the point.
I also really liked those two free point&click games released recently:
If On A Winter’s Night, Four Travelers has incredible pixel art and animations for a free project. The second chapter is one of my best gaming moments of the year so far. It gets really dark though, so check the content warnings first.
I just got a 3ds because there was one available locally for cheap. This is basically my first time using a DS or 3DS, so there’s a massive catalogue of games for me to sift through. I have a good number of DS games I want to play, but none of the 3DS games I have seen really jump out at me.
What 3ds games do you recommend I try out? I am usually fond of RPGs and Action RPGs, and generally not interested in platformers.
I’m playing Carto right now. It’s adorable, has a cool concept (you move map tiles around to change the layout of the world to solve puzzles), tickles my brain the right amount, and quite chill. And it’s on Game Pass!
Really love my 3DS, but we have pretty different taste! Strong action sorta RPGs that come to mind are Kid Icarus: Uprising (deserves much more love from the broader world) and Zelda A Link Between Worlds (great Zelda game, you know how it is). I think Rune Factory 4 is a pretty fun ARPG + farming game, and of course Monster Hunter is on the system a few times.
In more straight-up RPGs, I’m a big JRPG guy and loved Fire Emblem: Awakening (top ten game I have ever played), Etrian Odyssey 4 (which feels custom made for 3DS), and Bravely Default. All the Pokémon games on the console are also great in my opinion.
Thanks, that seems like a good list!
3/DS is a treasure trove when it comes to RPGs/JRPGs, but they can get expensive used. Like @Ryguy said, any Pokemon game you can find is great. I personally think Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby would be a great (and affordable) starting point, but people really like X/Y and Sun/Moon.
The 3/DS family has Dragon Quest 4-9, and I’ve played all of them except 7, and think they’re all great except 6. They can be pricy used though. 7 and 8 are on the 3DS eshop.
Kid Icarus Uprising is a great game. It really tries to do a lot of interesting things, and even if it’s not successful in all of them I really appreciate the weirdness of it.
Just like Dragon Quest and Pokemon, there’s a ton of great Atlus games on the system, Shin Megami Tensei IV might be a good one to start out with. And, like DQ and Pokemon, they can be expensive used. Strange Journey: Redux is great and difficult, and I liked it a lot better than Etrian Odyssey, but they both scratch a similar itch.
If you haven’t played Chrono Trigger, I love the ds port. Great JRPG, many people consider it one of the best. One of those “canon” games that I think it worth it to play.
I’ve never played it, but Austin Walker loves Fantasy Life, and I really want to give it a shot.
I don’t think you can really go wrong with anything myself or Ryguy listed depending on what you like. Again, I love the 3/DS family, and it’s the perfect RPG machine.
To add on you can get almost all of them I believe via the eShop at a much lower price. SMT IV on Amazon is $60+, eShop has it for $20.
Same goes for Pokemon, would suggest getting those on eShop over physical. Not ideal for people who want to make sure they have a physical cart but it beats paying the incredible markup.
Thanks! I am happy with electronic copies, so that works for me!
Kid Icarus: Uprising looks fantastic! I can’t wait to start playing it.
I have played a good number of Pokemon games and I’m not that into them anymore. Similarly, I played Chrono Trigger a while ago and loved it, but I don’t think I want to revisit it yet.
I haven’t played much Dragon Quest, so I should probably check out at least one of them.
I bounced off of Persona 5 because of many reasons that people have talked to death, but I have been watching Dia Lacina’s let’s play of the original SMT and that has been… interesting. Maybe I should try SMT4 to see how the series has changed.
if you’ve never played the N64 Zeldas, I think the 3DS remasters are the best versions of those games available. A Link Between Worlds is also very enjoyable. I think Fire Emblem Awakening is also great. Otherwise, I am a big fan of the Ace Attorney games. The original (GBA/DS) trilogy I think is on the Switch, but the 3DS has some titles that are still exclusive to the 3DS.
Popping in to also recommend Ocarina and Majora’s Mask 3D. They were the first experiences I had with those games and are genuinely fantastic remakes.
(Also glad you’ve joined the Kid Icarus: Uprising gang — that game is so so good.)
Everyone I’ve interacted with that has played KI:U has loved it. To me, it’s probably the best Star Fox game since 64, and perhaps the best Star Fox game that we’ll get (I know it’s not SF, but it scratches the same itch and is a delight to play).
banging on table like child who wants cheerios SYN-THE-TIK! SYN-THE-TIK! SYN-THE-TIK!
A very brief off-topic thank you to the Mod team for swiftly releasing us from read-only jail.
Okay folks, I think I’ve asked this question before, but it’s worth re-upping. You ever look in the fridge, see a bounty of good things you could eat, and decide you’re not really interested in any of them? If you, like me, go into cycles where you do that with games for weeks at a time, what game pulls you out of that cycle?
