Shin Megami Tensei V - officially announced for Switch

Aww yeah, SMT 5. This looks like it’s being made with (possibly a variation of) the P5 engine? Which I guess isn’t that surprising.

Seems like it really is Switch exclusive. Guess I’m getting a Switch, then.

Couldn’t see a topic in search, so apologies if old.

Well, then! News was just circulating the other day about how Nintendo was really open to having adult-themed games for the Switch - SMT V seems like a pretty timely announcement in that context.

I hope it has a decent save system - it’s been a while, but aren’t SMT games usually “save outside of the dungeon or you’re screwed” save systems?

In both SMTIV and SMTIV: Apocalypse you can save anywhere, so I’d imagine it will be the same here since Deep Strange Journey is also having that change implemented into it since in the OG version of SJ you could only save at specific terminal points.

EDIT: Also just noticed that another user posted the same topic about SMTV like a couple of minutes before mine (when I searched it wasn’t there, I swear), it really is like on GAF here, lol.

Happily, threads can easily be merged here

Switch exclusive? Atlus gonna Atlus.

Anyway, seems like it’s using the same engine as Persona 5.

I’m reading that as you saying it’s a bad idea for them to make it a Switch exclusive - out of curiosity, how come? It seems like a dungeon crawl like that is perfectly set up for the Switch - non-intensive, the kind of gameplay you can do in small chunks… Really, it’s like a 3DS game but fancier.

Well, SMT IV and SMT IV-A were 3DS exclusives, Strange Journey was a DS exclusive, the remake is a 3DS exclusive, so…

Seems like Persona is a Sony/PC series and SMT is now Nintendo, primarily handhelds (and Switch is both).

Also, it’s SMT x FE, not Persona x FE. Another nod to the relationship. Oh, I suppose their was the Persona Q stuff but that is also more purely a dungeon crawler ike SMT.

Hmm, Devil Survivor and Soul Hacker Redux also Nintendo handheld exclusive.

This is looking like a 2019 game for sure.

I hope the localization won’t take as long as it did for SMTIV.

I assume he means because Persona has been getting more popular, but I feel like the audiences don’t overlap that much anymore

Yep. In fact, if you liked the social part of Persona the most there’s a chance you won’t find the mainline SMT games and other spinoffs as pallatable since they are much more focused on dungeon crawling and exploration.

This is on Unreal Engine 4.

Tokyo always gets picked on.

There’s not a lot of information to go on, but SMTIV was a very good game. It was accessible to newcomers while also being challenging and rich in content and gameplay systems. I think SMTV will probably continue down that path. I find it pretty weird that Persona is Sony exclusive while SMT is Nintendo exclusive recently. You’d think they would just slap the game on whatever. I’m convinced that Persona 5 DX will probably also come to the Switch, so I can see SMT V DX coming to PS4 in the future.

Oh really? Derp. Still looks good though!

YES! So pumped to play this. I hope the localization is swift.

These games are kind of like Persona without the life sim part correct? Don’t know if I would enjoy since the character interaction is my favorite part of Persona, not the dungeons.

They’re still centered around a story, you’re just not having to manage your days while a cat forces you to sleep.

I forgot Atlus switched up europe publishers so now this may come out over here in a normal timeframe after the US release.

Yessssssss! SMT is one of my favorite series of games. Loved it since Nocturne. Very much looking forward to playing this on my Switch, will probably be a perfect train game.

On an unrelated note…

If Atlas ever gets its head out of its rear and unblocks the share button on persona 5 I’ll finally dig in

Can’t view the trailer at the moment, but pretty excited for this! Did they give any kind of release window? Otherwise I’m going to assume it’s first half of 2020 in the west. hahaha
