Yup! That’s why Sonic briefly “accidentally” has rabbit ears in the most recent Sonic Mania trailer. It’s an explicit reference to this.

I love that little opening. I also love that it doubles as a reference to concept art of Sonic 3. The same sketch also made it into a minigame called Sonic the Sketchog.
Didn’t get mentioned in the article, but I believe its also common knowledge that a lot of those bunny concepts ended up being worked into Ristar.
