Yeah I have had this conversation with other people too and I think he does say something to that effect as well, but I think by showing his tableau of encounters with other aliens as Kurt Ego Russell the film visually undermines that a little. In my opinion anyway. It’s certainly not the worst sin ever, I just kinda wish they did something else with it given they’re clearly happy to be leaning heavier on that Ditko/Kirby cosmic weirdness now.
This might be my favorite Marvel movie. Its definitely hands down the most interesting. All of the various lenses on the idea of family felt involving, and they went way further with the living planet concept than I expected.
My read is that Ego doesn’t actually “need” another celestial to help him with his project, but he craves a peer, or a child, someone else who will be around once the work has completed. You can see it in a lot of his reactions, and of course in the “not alone” line
Yo, on the real…I hated this movie in a way that was utterly disappointing and unexpected.
I felt like they really struggled to recapture the group’s dynamic from the first film without the pretense that they had just met, and their quarreling seemed really forced and played up almost entirely for the sake of comedy which just came off bizarre to me.
Some of the dialogue in the beginning (The spaceship chase scene where rocket and Quill argue especially comes to mind) felt so stilted and unnatural that I’d believe you if you told me an actual alien wrote it.
It felt like it tried too hard to be funny and nonlinear without finding the proper footing for what was actually going on.
The pacing also really got to me and I never really felt truly invested in what was going on. The beginning of the movie really betrays the third act, which I actually thought was suprisingly satisfying. I dug the family theme that it tried to establish, but Quill and Ego/Gamora and Nebula weren’t on screen together enough to set up the legitimately cool moments of vindication/reconciliation at the end.
It’s glaringly obvious that Ego wasn’t going to make it out of the movie alive, so there’s not really any big reveal and the build up to that final fight was missing something that the first film established with their multiple run-ins with Ronan.
I agree that Nebula and Yondu were great in it, but simultaneously I feel like that came at the expense of any real stand out performance from the main cast outside of Rocket.
Realistically the Quill/Gamora storyline could’ve been cut to give them more time to interact with their respective family members and it might have all flowed just a bit better.
I’m certain I’m in the minority for this opinion and I realize it makes me seem like I hater, so I want to hedge this all by assuring you I really, really liked the first GOTG and generally enjoy the MCU films but this one just felt like a stinker to me.
I really wanted to like this movie more but i felt like i could see James Gunn’s writing formula the entire time i was watching it.
Drax went from being a character i kind of liked in the first movie to one of the most obnoxious assholes in this movie. All his jokes at the expense of Mantis made me feel bad for her and made me like Drax less.
Especially sick of Gunn’s lazy sex jokes. Come on dude.
A lot of the dialogue in this movie felt like a Modern Day Hollywood Action Movie Mad Libs.
I also got really tired of almost every sincere scene having to end with a joke. In some cases that can be funny. But when you do it over and over again it has way less impact.
Also yelling exposition at other characters to explain why someone was acting the way they did happened at least twice , possibly 3 times. I just think there was a less clunky way of going about it. Film is a visual medium. Utilize it better.
In the grand scheme of the MCU it ranks 9th for me out of 15. It may come off like i hate this movie but i didn’t. I just wish hadn’t doubled down on the wrong elements.
I absolutely loved Yondu and he really was the heart of the film, the whole arc about Peter’s ‘father’ and his ‘dad’ was wonderfully handled and that sequence of brief flashbacks in the climax really got me.
Also super excited for the third Guardians film after ~that~ post-credits scene.
I really enjoyed it. Laughed a lot, got a bit emotional with Yondu (and whoever Kurt from Gilmore Girls plays) and generally had a grand old time. I actually felt it lost its way a bit in the action sequences, but overall would watch again and have some grumpy friends that could 100% do with a dose of GotG.
I dug it! Not sure if I like it more than the first one, but if they can make a good trilogy overall I’ll call this my fav series in the MCU just above Thor (Ragnarok looks DOPE btw).
The A plot with Ego was super predictable and that was disappointing, tho Drax and Mantys saved it, but the B plot with Yondu and Rocket was VERY good and overall it came together for me and i super enjoyed it.
The banter was super solid, it really felt like the cast has got a good handle on their characters and can fit comfortably in their shoes. Baby Groot was great and not overused and a charming adorable realistic toddler.
The song picks for the soundtrack I felt weren’t as good as the first one. The Zune at the end was hilarious tho I cant wait to see what’s on THAT.
My last point is personally I’m both surprised and glad that there was very little mention of any Infinity War stuff in this. I love GotG because its so detached from it, which is hilarious because theyre the only MCU main characters who even know Thanos exists rn hahaha. Its great. I almost hope they just MISS the Infinity War and have to be told “Oh yeah Thanos? Hes SUPER dead, did you not hear about all those Earth people who stopped him?”
