[Spoilers]The Mandalorian Discussion Thread

You know what, I saw Akira Kurosawa’s Hidden Fortress for the first time less than 365 days before I saw Force Awakens and I count it as one of 4 reasons why I found the Abrams movie boring. Other 3 are video game Wolfenstein New Order, animated series Elscaflowne and Gurren Lagan. So if the ghost of Kurosawa can make a Star War, I would watch it!

God I really thought Gideon just had a sickass vibroblade, but learning it’s this wild shit instead is very cool.

Here’s a quick and dirty vid on the blade.

Watched it this week on a free trial, since I was babysitting and didn’t own Toy Story, and thought it was pretty good. Campy, but charming. Baby Yoda is almost insufferably cute. Richard Ayoade is a very funny droid. Taika Waititi continues to be the only one injecting genuine humour into Disney’s stale franchises. Dune and the blacksmith lady are good, in my bisexual opinion. Pedro Pascal deserves a big TV role where his face is both visible and not maimed violently. The thing that mase me stop watching GOT was the death of Oberyn.

Rise of Skywalker did kill the Star Wars buzz for me over the Christmas period, but I watched the final two episodes of Mando last night and ah… it’s just so good.

  • Felt as if everything had stakes, I was genuinely sad to see some of the characters go. Nick Nolte hasn’t been this good in years.
  • The look of shame and powerlessness on Mando’s actual face was so good. In some ways I preferred him as a cypher, but the backstory in this episode was really done well - combined with him learning to trust a droid again.
  • It continues to be the best star wars game I can never play. The heavy blaster Cara Dune wields… the even heavier blaster Mando uses against the Imperials. The mando vs tie fighter fight… And yes bashing stormtroopers in the face with a hammer should send shards of plastic flying.
  • I don’t know what the darksaber is, but sure looks cool.
  • Do we still not know which character was teased at the end of the Tatooine episode? Looks as if Moff Gideon will remain the big bad for series 2 - which I’m 100% here for. Love that he’s channeling the Fring into his villain and away from all the English accents of yore. Kinda sad that we don’t get to see Herzog again. He was perfect as the old nazi in hiding.
  • The scout tropper dialogue felt like a Taika Waititi picture. Love how it played into the idea that stormtroopers still can’t shoot for shit.

Just finished watching the series. Overall I enjoyed it. The action really ramped up these last few episodes. Like most people here it seems, I’m bummed Mando doesn’t get a crew finally. I really like Cara Dune. I’m interested in seeing where the story goes next. Who is Baby Yoda’s “family”? There are obviously more than just Yoda and Yaddle, but where and who? Will Mando find his way to Luke in his restarting the Jedi Order days and bring Baby Yoda to him?

My favorite development of the show though was how much my dad became invested in it. My mom and I watched the first 3 episodes together, and he happened to be in the room. I remember him asking specifically “So what’s the point of this show? What is he doing?”. He was super not interested. I think he missed the next one or two episodes, but was again in the room when watching the next one. I think it really turned around on the prison ship episode. That is when his ‘What that’s the end?!? I want more!’ phase began. At the end of the prison ship episode he said something along the lines of “That’s why you don’t mess with Mando!”. Then when Kuill died and Baby Yoda got captured he said, “No! They can’t get Baby Yoda!” He even mentioned when the next season is coming out. It was super nice and endearing to see him make this 180 flip on the show. I didn’t expect him to like it, and then to see him really like it, so much so, that he knows when season 2 comes out and can’t wait for it. It’s just super nice and cute. It has nothing to do with the quality of the show, but that made me like the show even more.

i really think the character teased on Tattooine is just Moff Gideon.

Seconded. I think it’s awkward and doesn’t pay off well, but it is absolutely who I thought that was.

Oh, you’re totally right.

I’m really disappointed in that setup now.

The thing is though, they use sound effects in that scene directly connected to Boba Fett:

Taika Waititi has been tapped to do a new Star War. He could make it a lot of fun. Have nothing to do with the empire, or Skywalkers, let him do his own thing.

My thinking is why would have Moff Gideon come out into the middle of desert on Tatooine in the dead of night to check the body of this revered but dead bounty hunter?

She was an imperial assassin, not bounty hunter if I recall correctly. So Moff Gideon checking out a former imperial’s death makes sense to me.

But tbh I think people just really WANT it to be Boba Fett and are bending over backwards to interpret it that way. Likewise, I don’t want it to be him and support that in my own way.

I don’t really think people are ‘bending over backwards’ when the choice to do a sound effect that is directly connected with Boba Fett is played right when the feet appear.

Every scene of the show that didn’t have Boba Fett in it should have ended with a character going “Boba Fett, where’s Boba Fett?!”

I’m going to go on a tangent and mention that The Mandalorian is now really making me wish Disney would do an Adventures of Lando Calrissian TV show starring Donald Glover. It could span the period before and after the Solo movie, and would be awesome.

Lando is way more of an interesting character than Boba Fett and the movies tell us very little about him. He doesn’t even really have an arc in them, his arc happens before - going from a smuggler and gambler, to an official trying to do right by his people. I think it could be cool! And a black lead who’s only lines aren’t “REY, REY” in 2 of the 3 movies he’s in?

They should do a Young Lando Calrissian Chronicles show so each episode could be bookended by Billy Dee Williams at a fancy dinner party on Canto Bight or something like “hey that reminds me of the time when…”

Well, I think that WAS the plan until the numbers for Solo came in.

Also, rumors abound:

Come on… put Ewan McGregor in Star Wars again. For his own sake.

Ugh, Disney are cowards. The Clone Wars cartoon movie also bombed, that didn’t stop them from continuing the series.

The Kenobi series better happen! More Ewan McGregor Kenobi would be great!
