Spotify's "Your 2017 Wrapped" - Share your music stats

Spotify has this website “Your 2017 Wrapped” that gives you stats on your use of the site. The website can be found here: https://2017wrapped.com

I thought it would be neat if we shared our results here and also some youtube links to our top five songs so that we can all quickly and easily click to discover what other Waypointers have been listening to. Those of you who don’t use Spotify, I would still love to hear what are the five songs you think you spent the most time listening to.

Uh Oh (English Version) - Chloé Wang.
Turn Around (5,4,3,2,1) - Flo Rida
California Über Alles - Dead Kennedys
Beautiful Crime - Tamer
The One - Slaughterhouse

standard me

Darkest Day - The Great Discord
Bright - Amunoa
The Red Rabbit - The Great Discord
Endless Fantasty - Anamanaguchi
The Lobbyist - Lettuce

Despite Pop being my top genre, only two of my top songs would I really call pop (I’ll leave it to y’all to find out which).

Mine sucks but I’m sharing it anyway.

A few notes:

  • I only started using Spotify in the last few months, so it has been a lot of me just digging through old songs I like.
  • My friend ruined a lot of my Spotify by putting on that awful terryfold song for like 4 hours on loop one day.
  • I have no idea how Spotify thinks Metallica is my favourite just because I like One. I smash that “Don’t Play This Song Again” option whenever other Metallica comes up.
  • The Hexvoid track isn’t even my favourite Let It Die track? I have no idea how it got on there?
  • You know I’m a fucking hipster when it comes to Alexisonfire when the song I listened to the most this year is a bonus B-side track only available on certain versions of one of their albums.
  • The DevilDriver cover of Sail is fucking hilarious. I love it.

Anyway, here are the tracks:

One - Metallica
Sail - DevilDriver
Let It Die - Hexvoid
My God Is A Reasonable Man - Alexisonfire

Aside: Did anyone actually get a helpful “Songs you wish you heard earlier this year” or whatever list? I got 29 songs that were pure crap.

I’m honestly pretty happy with mine, mainly because I guessed correctly what my top artist, genre and song were:

Only problem I have with it is that Helter Skelter by Siouxsie and the Banshees didn’t make it into my top five songs while California did which is weird cause on my top 100 playlist, Helter Skelter is second behind Anthem for the Year 2000 while California doesn’t even crack the top five.

Anyways, here’s some song links:

  1. Anthem for the Year 2000- Silverchair
  2. Helter Skelter- Siouxsie and the Banshees
  3. Blue Monday- HEALTH
  4. Monster Mash- Bobby “Boris” Pickett
  5. US Forces (Live @ The Metro)- Midnight Oil
  6. California- Childish Gambino
  7. Blind (Live)- Silverchair
  8. 30,000 Pounds of Bananas (Live)- Harry Chapin
  9. Kirby- Aesop Rock
  10. Short Memory (Live @ The Metro)- Midnight Oil

It’s totally not coincidental that my number one song this year is one which starts out with the lines “We are the youth, we’ll take your fascism away”, no sir. Also it’s totally on-brand for me to have my first post on the Waypoint forum be me talking about music, aka the thing I listen to all the time when I’m not listening to podcasts or watching something.

I listen to way less music in Japan than I used to back home and I feel like my stats don’t truly represent my tastes because of it. Also I listened to a bunch of J-Pop that isn’t on Spotify so ???

This is the least surprising list. Vulfpeck devoured my brain this year.

top artist got skewed by me listening to albums in their entirety 99% of the time and putting on the bastion and pyre soundtracks a couple of times lol

to be fair, those are very good soundtracks and darren korb is a fine composer

but yeah i don’t think i’ve listened to a single thing he’s done outside of those two soundtracks!

without him on that list, i’m sure frank ocean is top 5

I don’t use Spotify but I’m sure it’s 95% Bowie.

I play a certain playlist at work 1-2 times a week to help me concentrate and surprise, surprise, my top three artists are the first three albums on that list. xP

The Devil You Know - The Kite String Tangle
Tough on You - DON BROCO
You Wanna Know - Club Sex Mix - DON BROCO
Waiting - The Kite String Tangle

I mainly use spotify for ambient albums when I’m working on stuff but it looks like my Overwatch playlist took over my year end list. Also KOOL A.D. cheated by having multiple 100 song albums.

This is pretty inaccurate. St.Vincent (her new album isn’t even very good) and The Cardigans can’t possibly be top five. And all the top songs except Sun to Solar is just because I have them separate in some playlist and clicked on them individually a lot of times, not because I listened to them more times than other songs. These are good hits, it’s just not accurate.

Artist that should’ve been in top five instead: Amber Coffman, Kelly Lee Owens, Julia Holter, Mount Eerie, Talking Heads, Bob Dylan, Deerhoof, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Susanne Sundför, SZA.

Big shoutout to Wednesday Campanella though, who kept me happy a lot this year.

I throw on a lot of lo-fi hip-hop when I study, so this list doesn’t surprise me at all.

I am also too lazy to link the songs. Just listen to the Waypoint podcast to hear my top track.

Yeah, I guess I really did have More Life on repeat this year. Hideki Naganuma came from listening to a Jet Set Radio playlist I used while playing Lucio during Overwatch, lol.

Yeah, I was 3 out of 3 on the guesses, but that wasn’t much of a surprise.

Year of Kung Fu Kenny, Brockhampton and Flower Boy, for sure.

I end up listening to full albums (or starting them, at least) so much that 4 of my top 5 are the first track off albums I listen to a lot ha.

Aw dunk, mine’s way skewed 'cause I sleep to music D: The major non-sleep stuff I listened to most were a few tracks from Let it Die, apparently, but I’m still pretty amused by this “top genre” list

Given that I’m a folk musician, the amount of metal and post rock on my list is slightly hilarious.

but it’s common that musicians tend to listen to a wide variety of music styles, no?

looking at my list, badbadnotgood was my favorite found of the year without a doubt, I’m digging the playlist they made with songs that I missed this year
