Stellaris Discussion: The Worm Loves You

AFAIK, you can basically multiply the damage statistic of a weapon by the % “ignores” for each type to get an idea of the effective damage it will do against that type of defense. If your enemy has a certain type of defense, you can do the multiplication and figure out which one is best against it.

Again, this is just my working knowledge of the admittedly fairly complex calculus that goes into combat.

New dev diary is up! Some changes I really dig in this version, and one I’m really sad about. Overall, it’s a buff to hive minds, fanatic purifiers, corporate dominions, and terraforming in general. There’s a big nerf to the Discovery tree, a minor nerf to unity generation, and a big nerf to the Enigmatic Fortress chain.

This was on sale not too long ago and boy it sucked me in pretty hard.

I uh… settled a gaia world and was all excited about it but then I found out what holy worlds were and that was a very sad day.

Now you’ve learned an important lesson about murdering Fallen Empires before they get you.

Quick question: I watched the stream that Austin, Danielle and Rob did last month and got super interested in this game. I’m mostly a console/handheld gamer, and I haven’t seen a definitive answer as to whether or not my laptop can run Stellaris.

Does anybody know if Stellaris is playble on a late 2012 Macbook Pro?

I’m not really a spec guy, but with a comp that old, it may struggle with lategame fleet sizes. You might be fine early game though, it will depend on your graphics card.

I came back to Stellaris last week, bought Utopia and Leviathan and I’ve been playing quite a bit. Yes the diplomacy still needs a lot of love and also more event are needed badly. However, is much much better than at release. It would be nice if I didn’t need to basically buy the game again every year to have the best experience, but well … Paradox. I’m looking forward to see what they do next, the stream discussing changes to the FTL system is promising for combat.

My current empire is extremely lucky, venerable friendly snails Fanatic Materialists and xenophiles in a 1000 stars spiral galaxy it spawned next to 3 empires and one fallen empire all xenophiles and a lot of room to expand. The fallen empire awoke yesterday just before I had to go to bed and I became its subject. I don’t know what will happen now, I love it.

I play on a 2013 macbook pro and it runs mostly fine. The fan always runs at 100% and I thiiiink the graphics get a tiny bit spotty sometimes but I’m pretty happy with it

Also since I didnt start playing unstil super recently it was kind of hard to get a read on the utopia expansion because every review I could find talked just as much about the 1.5 update, which was all I’d really experienced, without distinguishing too much between the two.

Utopia sounds good but I just dont think I can justify spending money on it right now. ( not that I don’t think it’s worth $20, just that $20 can buy things like food that I need)

Anyone happen to have any mod suggestions?

Paradox had a stream recently showcasing some mods, my personal favorite is Plentiful Traditions. I’ve heard the Star Trek mod is really good too if you’re into that.

Stellaris is in this upcoming Humble Monthly for $12.

I was gonna wait to buy this game for a bit, but I certainly can’t justify that now. I love what I saw on the Waypoint stream and I can’t wait to dip my toe in it.

Any early game tips?

Do the tutorial (at least until you get your bearings) and don’t be afraid to pause often and find your bearings. Explore, explore, explore, push the envelope, go as far as your FTL will allow you. Once you find the effective “edges” of the space available to you, you know what your playground is. Fill it.

Oh, and have lots of military power, even if you’re peaceful.

Mods that give you more flag backgrounds and icons are fun. There’s a Warhammer 40k mod that I wanted to try but it isn’t compatible with the newest update (I don’t know how these things work, maybe it would technically work and they just don’t want you to be under the impression it will work perfectly?)

Beautiful battles is supposed to be pretty good but I haven’t gotten to see it yet.

Alphamod is apparently a really big mod but I haven’t gotten that one yet.

I downloaded one that ads planet types but I think it completely broke because I have a bunch of planets now that are just blank grey disks.

I have a mod that adds the mass effect soundtrack to the playlist, which is pretty dang good.

Beautiful Universe makes the skybox real nice.

I like More Leader Traits because it’s nice to have more personality

Plenty of namelist packs.

There’s a UI Overhaul 1080p that I use when I’m playing on my desktop since I have a large screen and default is real hard to see at 1440p. (Even when I bump it down to 1080 it is still tiny.) The game has UI scaling but it is buggy as hell. I tried it for a second but you can’t reliably click on things because the game doesn’t know where the buttons are sometimes.

This.

I’ve made the mistake of being a bit too peaceful and having that bite me in the ass when pirates showed up. Also when a warmongering empire-swallowing empire showed up a bit too close to me and decided they wanted a piece of me.

It is also useful for clearing out systems so you can get a good planet. Sometimes some aliens will be hanging out in a system that has resources that would be a massive help to you, so it’s good to have something strong enough to kick them out.

My group plays on Fast constantly. Pauses are a distant memory except when someone has a big wordy event to read

I find it’s helpful to emphasize mineral production in the early game and just try to keep energy production in the black. Don’t go too all-out with founding colonies (they slow down your research), but when you do make sure to invest in spaceports—they increase your fleetcap without (as far as I know) impacting research costs.

Wait I knew colony founding sucked energy for a while but I was unaware it slowed down research

Yep—more precisely, owned planets increase research cost. My understanding of the math is that you’ll make that up in increased research speed once the colony is developed, assuming you’ve got a few labs on there, but the short-term effect is slower research.

I’ve been trying my best to love this game as much as I want to but yeah, as other people have already pointed out the emphasis on combat and total inability to get a Federation going is really bumming me out.

I love all the little stories and events you can come across, I love all the politicking you can do to try to appease other civilizations, but the moment I get dragged into a war with someone they inevitably have a fleet that dwarfs my own and I get creamed and have to start from scratch.

If this game let me focus more on political intrigue rather than just having to steam roll other civs I’d be more into it but I suspect that kind of depth isn’t there.

Given what I’ve said, I’ve noticed other people talking about CKII, and I’m curios if that would that be more my kind of jam?
