Isn’t The Lost Levels (or Super Mario Bros 2 in Japan) “an ultra challenging platformer from Nintendo”? At least I thought it was pretty hard.

It’s also great, so I’d highly recommend it you haven’t already played it, Patrick.

Have you heard of a little game called Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Patrick?

Though I’m not sure if that counts considering it’s made by Retro Studios, but nonetheless - it’s Very Hard.
