The Comic Books thread, for talking about Comics in Books

Hell Yeah to everything I’ve read on your list. Archie’s horror offerings have been great so I’m excited to read that Jughead book.

I just read through Haunter. What a gorgeous comic. The colors, the flow of action, the concept. Wonderful. Excellent rec

I just started Peter David’s X-factor Investigations series. It’s character focused stories immediately remind me of some of my favorite comics (Starman and Manhunter).

Also, East of West is the sci-fi apocalypse western political thriller that the world didn’t know it needed until Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta started making it.

I’ve been deep into Image series again

Saga, the lastest arc ended not too long ago and is quite a good recovery from a sagging previous arc.
Paper Girls continues to look fantastic and I’m interested it where its going to go
Sex Criminals has finally come back, I actually haven’t read the newest yet but I’ve heard good things
Chew recently finished and is a good read, I highly recommend. I wasn’t quite sure where he wanted to go with it but I did enjoy that last arc quite a bit.

I read a LOT:

Marvel: Hawkeye, because Kate Bishop is the best, Occupy Avengers, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Spider-Man/Deadpool when Joe Kelly and Ed McGuiness are on it, and I’m hype for noted NICE MAN Chip Zdarsky and Adam Kubert’s Spider-Man. I also dabble with the Unlimited App, currently reading Gwenpool which is cute and nice.

DC: Young Animals, Nightwing, Batgirl, Batgirl and the BOP, All Star Batman, Flash

Image: Sex Crimz, Saga, The Wicked + The Divine, plus whatever grabs my fancy.

My trades backlog: A ton of IDW Transformers stuff, Injection, Flash by Mark Waid v1, the complete Phonogram, and Harley Quinn by Kesel and the Dodsons, and a few Image #1s. Oh and some horror manga omnibuses.

Did y’all see that they just added Marvel to the Comixology Unlimited subscription? That’s kind of a big deal.

One I forgot to add earlier is The Dregs from Black Mask Studios.

It’s like the grimiest noir movie you ever saw. It touches on gentrification, homelessness, addiction.

Great book.

Ooh that sounds like something I would like.

How’s Black Hammer? I meant to pick it up when it started but never did, even though I love the premise.

I’m currently obsessed with anything spider gwen is in, but also really enjoy the new robbie reyes ghost rider, amadeus cho hulk, and the current daredevil run which STORY wise ranges from good to just alright, but has some of the most amazing artwork I’ve seen in a comic.

Sounds potentially cool, but the biggest issue I have with Comixology Unlimited is that, last I checked, it is basically just the first one or two trades of a series so it’s literally designed to hook you on a series so you buy the rest on comixology. Which, I understand the business sense of that, but when Marvel Unlimited gives you like every Marvel comic ever (albeit with a three month delay), MU just seems like a way better deal than CU.

I really like it. My favourite of his is still Underwater Welder, but this is up there with that.

Ormston’s artwork also its really well with the kind of story they’re telling. It has a Twilight Zone type feel to it because of the era the heroes come from as well as the style of story Lemire is telling.

I think the first trade dropped a few weeks ago.

My biggest issue with comixology is I like my local comic book shop and that does nothing to support them. I like the convenience of digital issues I just don’t feel right about giving even more of my money to amazon.

I’m not really up on a lot of comic series right now, but I am in love with Mirror by Hwei Lim and Emma Rios. It’s in the middle of its second story arc right now, I’m having trouble describing it but it has a really unique sci-fi/fantasy setting with a strong emotional core. It’s also beautiful to read, the style is very loose and watercolory

Every print book I’m reading these days isn’t mainstream Big 2, and I’m not sure whether that says more about my taste or more about DC and Marvel. I did pick up the first issue of the new America Chavez book, but I couldn’t get into it. But I read Tom King’s runs on The Vision and Omega Men recently and loved them a lot, so maybe when he starts his New Gods book I’ll try that. I’ve tried to get into Valiant for awhile but nothing has really stuck.

Current pull is The Wicked + The Divine, East of West, Saga, Shutter, The Woods, Shade the Changing Girl and Sex Criminals, all of which I’m fairly fond of, although WicDiv is my favorite thing on the market by leaps and bounds. Shutter and Woods are both ending soon, which will break my heart.

Yeah, I’m torn on this as well. I really like physical media and the act of going to the comic book shop every Wednesday, knowing I’m supporting a cool local spot. But managing all the books gets difficult, especially when I’m looking to move this fall.

I pretty much only read comics digitally now. I have no problem with it as there are no comics near me within a 100 miles.

As someone who’s moved around NYC a lot in the last decade, let me tell you something. It is MUCH easier to transport a ipad then it is 4 longboxes and a book shelf full of trades.

Over the past like two years I’ve really downsized the list of stuff I pick up every month, but currently I’m reading WicDiv, East of West, and COPRA. I’ve been really enjoying Last Man too, but those volumes only come out like twice a year.

Injection, East Of West, Saga, All-Star Batman are the things I’m regularly reading on a monthly basis. Really enjoyed what I’ve read of the first arc of Motor Crush too.

Got to shout out Godshaper, the new Si Spurrier book on Boom!. First issue out a few weeks back and it blew me away. One of the best looking comics in ages, super cool premise, great characters.
