Loved Spikey Seeds, the Pillows song that plays in the ED of Progressive
I started watching Deca Dence and boy, does that show go from “Meh…alright” to “Wait, what the actual hell?!” real fast.
The anime No Guns Life is actually a decent cyberpunk story, which took me by surprise. Wasn’t sure what I was expecting, but not that.
I’ve been watching My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. I binged the first two seasons, and have been liking the third one too. It can be a little pretentious, takes itself too seriously, but it’s also sensitive and sweet. Now I guess my question is why the hell is it called My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU?? With that kind of name I expected people bumping into each other with toast in their mouths or whatever, but it’s just a pretty normal drama. And the third season has CLIMAX added as well. Huh!
How many episodes should I give Iron-Blooded Orphans before I make a final determination about whether or not it’s my kind of thing?
UPDATE: I’ll do a longer post about it later, but Netflix’s Ghost In The Shell features a just delightful solo Batou episode and so I wanted to make sure I shouted that out while I’m thinking of it.
Honestly 3 episodes is still the gold standard for trying out any anime you’re unsure on. If you’re not feeling it by then, I think you can say you gave it a fair shot.
I liked Orphans well enough, although it’s not my favourite Gundam show. Are you trying it out specifically, or are you trying to figure out if Gundam overall is for you?
A little of column A, a little of column B. It’s my first Gundam, but also lots of folks recommended it specifically, so I figured I’d give it a shot and see what happens.
Regarding Netflix’s GITS:
+They got the SAC voice cast back together
+It feels just like more SAC
-No Yoko Kanno
-Cliffhanger ending
+++++Batou solo episode!
Honestly worth checking out for the Batou solo episode by itself.
And no one warned me that Kids on the Slope was going to absolutely annihilate me emotionally in addition to having an incredible soundtrack
If IBO isn’t hooking you just watch 0080 War in the Pocket instead. It’s only 6 episodes and easily a best in the franchise.
If you want dumb Saturday morning style Gundam watch G Gundam. It is not good and it has some bad stereotypes but it scratches that turn your brain off and watch people fight in big mechs itch. It also has an amazing english dub.
Burn The Witch was cool. Only three episodes so it could afford to look very nice. I don’t know anything about the series it’s a spinoff off but maybe there are stuff you understand more if you do.
From what I’ve heard it doesn’t actually have that much of a connection to Bleach beyond being set in the same world, and that having read/watched Bleach doesn’t really add much to Burn the Witch. I did hear that the movie (which Crunchyroll split up into three episodes for some reason) doesn’t adapt the manga’s first chapter so it could be that reading that makes things more understandable. I still need to watch it myself.
Does seem like there’s a decent amount of good stuff this season, though I’ve only really checked out four shows so far:
Jujutsu Kaisen looks to be a pretty good shonen series with great animation. The first two episodes are both pretty fun with an immediately likeable cast of characters. It’s got the director of the God of High School anime behind it, and it definitely has that show’s flair for action with lots of camera movements. Unlike God of High School it looks to be a closer adaptation of the manga though. Also the OP and ED are both pretty good.
Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai is pretty fun, seems like a good shonen series to just turn your brain off to. It’s pretty well produced as well, I get the idea that Toei in general has been pretty good with making their shows look nice lately and it really shows here. I think that the regular Dragon Ball animators are on this though don’t quote me on that.
Akudama Drive is a new anime from the Danganronpa creator and it sure is a Danganronpa. For better or worse, the characters are all the sort of characters that you could expect to see in one of those games. What sells me on this though is that this show just immediately slams the gas on its style and never takes it off. I’m not at all confident that it’ll handle its themes well, and it wouldn’t surprise me if it gets queerphobic or something at some point, but at the very least its action is incredibly fun to watch.
I also checked out the first episode of Talentless Nana, which feels like it’ll either be a fun mess or just garbage. I’ll probably wait and see what people think of it when more episodes have aired before I watch more of it.
If the first episode is anything to go on the new season of Golden Kamuy is going to be good. It hits the ground running right where S2 left off.
i read the manga for Talentless Nana for a while and it had a really strong first chapter before immediately falling off a cliff so i expect the anime will go the same way.
Adachi and Shimamura is good so far though i was hoping it would have the courage to get rid of the pointless alien child and the jokes about that one girl’s giant boobs. Hopefully it gets to some kind of resolution in one season but all the other versions of it are slow as hell so i doubt it.
Sleepy Princess in the Demon King’s Castle is a very good adaptation of a very funny manga and i’m excited for it to introduce a second joke next episode.
i don’t get why they decided to start Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear with a story from much later in the series rather than at the actual beginning, and making it apparently part of the game instead of something from after she gets isekai’d into the game.
I honestly found Burn the Witch to be kind of disappointing? I’m unfamiliar with the manga (or Bleach at all) but seeing the description of it a few months ago as “two witch girls fight dragons in magic London” seemed fun but I ended up with two problems with it. The first is that it feels like it’s the first mini-arc of a longer show because it set up so much and barely resolved anything so it was a pretty unsatisfying ending. The second thing is that most of the important things that are done or said/explained is all pretty much by everyone else and it felt like why even have these two girls here if they don’t get to actually do things.
I ended up checking out several shows so far this season and have mostly been enjoying them. Sport Climbing Girls seems fun and I like shows about niche sports. I had heard the manga is a bit too horny at times but that didn’t seem to translate to the first episode which was nice.
Akudama Drive, like trashtabby mentioned, is extremely stylish. I think it might be a bit of a problematic fave but it seems like it’ll be a fun ride so I’m on board for now.
I (mostly) really liked Adachi and Shimamura aside from the two things dordreff mentioned in the spoiler.
Golden Kamuy is back and wow I had forgotten how much I enjoyed the first two seasons of it.
Then I also watched Assault Lily Bouquet, Wandering Witch, and Warlords of Sigrdrifa but don’t have any significant thoughts on any of them other than “well this seems nice and watchable”.
Anime, it turns out, can be pretty alright sometimes.
I like that Higurashi appears to have somehow swerved everybody. Playing the OP from the first season seems like it was enough to get people.
I also really enjoyed the episode of Jujutsu Kaisen I caught. I’m always down for anything that has insane monster or evil spirit designs so I hope this show sticks to landing.
Good, bad, who can say. It was already owned by another mega corporation. I doubt much will happen with the quality of the service. People want to watch anime and put up with a lot of shitty quality services to do it, but it’d be nice to see it change.
Problem here is, Sony already owns Aniplex and Funimation. If they’re going to own Crunchyroll as well, then that’ll mean they will own almost every major anime distributor/licensor in the west. There’s also still Sentai Filmworks with Hidive, though they don’t get that many new anime and also now have a distribution deal with Crunchyroll. and there’s Netflix as well though they mainly focus on anime that they themselves fund and put their name on.
This isn’t just Crunchyroll going from being owned by a mega corporation to being owned by another mega corporation. Sony is effectively going to have a monopoly on modern anime in the west if this deal happens.
I certainly don’t see this improving the criminally low wages for the localization staff.
So I ended up binge watching season 2 and 3 of Aggretsuko over the weekend and there is stuff that comes up that I never would have guessed would have in a show with Sanrio characters. The idea that an important character would argue for basic universal income and challenge how important most jobs are in a society where they could be easily replaced was not something I saw coming at all.
I’ve been watching Ghost in the Shell SAC ! It’s really good even I’m bothered by how the Major is sometimes sexualized.
Also, Haikyuu is back and is still really awesome. I think it’s my fav sport shonen anime and wish there was more like it. It’s even better than Kuroro’s Basketball I think.
Reading through the last posts I wanna try DQ Adventure of Dai and am intrigued by Golden Kamui, so thanks for the ideas !!
