‘Valhalla’ Asks What Makes a Good King and a Great ‘Assassins Creed’

So, it turns out, if you disable the overlay it locks you out of the DLC you got, which sucks.

Thankfully though, it has settled down. I think my controller’s dongle may have been loose, because my disconnection issues aren’t as bad. There’s still a really bad cut to audio and pause of gameplay if you NUDGE your mouse by accident when playing with a controller.

So that’s bleh.

But I’m wondering why WD:L legion runs like such trash on my 2070 Super while this game, which looks MUCH prettier save for the lack of RTX, runs like a dream on ultra.

I don’t understand.

Jeff Gerstmann mentioned on the Bombcast that, according to Legion’s built-in benchmark, his CPU - an i7-6700k - was severely bottlenecking his GPU, whereas I think Valhalla’s supposed to be much more GPU-bound, so that could potentially be something to do with it?

I have the same CPU so, while I’m not actually planning to get Legion, I’m becoming increasingly aware of the fact that I’m probably gonna have to completely overhaul my PC soon.

I always have trouble with Ubisoft games on PC for some reason! I have a 1080 that performs just fine in any game, but when I boot up anything made by Ubisoft I have to tinker with the settings for hours just to get a solid frame rate. Valhalla has been extra frustrating because all the interior scenes have this weird washed out bloom that I assume is supposed to look good on HDR screens. I keep having to pause the game and mess with my monitor calibration.

Mark my words everyone: we are NOT going to look back at the early HDR era of games fondly. The garish, clashing colors that pop on HDR panels will never not be distracting and ugly. The way torches glow bright yellow in this game just looks awful!

Anyways, I’m really enjoying the game itself! The way missions are less directed already has me much more engaged than I ever was in Odyssey. The combat feels a lot less level bound as well. It’s good!

Some reviewer I watched, who is one of those PC BEST people, said that he quit playing Valhalla on the PC to continue on the Series X because of all the performance issues. Bugs aside, it sounds like the game runs locked at 60 on the Series X.

Wait, really? Geez, this new update to Ubisoft Connect sure was a worthwhile investment.

I disabled the overlay because despite disabling in-game notifications… I still got in-game notifications. I’m trying to enjoy your world, Ubisoft, I don’t need constant messages my friends have logged in nor do I need a giant purple popup telling me I completed a challenge.

This game is a hot mess of glitches, objectives being unclear, and locations of items being needlessly obtuse. More so than usual.

Ok, I just got to the part where Sigurd’s wife has confessed her love for Eivor.

FUCK FUCK FUCK WHAT DO I DO???

Edit: I went for it because I a spicy jerk who loves drama. CHOO CHOO TRAGEDY HERE I COME.

I peaked at the Beowulf DLC and… yikes.

So I took the daily quests for opal, and one of them was to track down a thief and kill them.

The marker led to Ravensthorpe, which was surprising.

Even more surprising was the foul villain there waiting for me.

This kind of reminds me of the time I installed a mod for skyrim that adds bounty boards. I grabbed a bounty from the board and it was a job that had me making a delivery from Whiterun to Solitude. I was to give a bow to… a character I immediately recognized as one who is executed publicly and does not exist in the game outside of that moment.

I walked in, watched the scene play out, and threw the bow I was supposed to deliver at his feet. I would never not be too late to give him the bow.

Anyway, the point is randomized quests having surprising elements the designer didn’t account for is very funny and good for roleplaying and if they fix that in Valhalla they’ll have made a mistake.
