Waypoint Is Joining the New VICE.com

I’m just happy Waypoint made it through the Vice restructuring relatively intact.
I have faith in Austin and the rest of the crew that the integrity and aim of the website will remain the same.

P.S. VICECOM is a decent name for a future Syndicate or megacorp or something like that.

Hmm…not gonna lie I’m a little nervous, but I’ll try to stay optimistic. Waypoint has really opened my eyes to what gaming and the industry could be, introduced me to topics I’ve never heard of, and helped me to better appreciate and be more mindful about my favorite hobby. Austin said in the announcement post that their coverage and analysis shouldn’t change, and at this point, I’m more than willing to give them all the benefit of the doubt.

I’m so grateful to be a part of this community, so as long as it’s here, I’m not going anywhere. Here’s to hoping for the best

I’m worried there is a shoe yet to drop on the podcast :frowning:

Another long time listener, forum lurker, and loyal reader here - Waypoint was more than just a site name; it was a beacon for games writing. It was a place where critical thought could thrive and it provided a platform to folks whose voices were usually only heard from the margins.

As long as the team, and that voice remains - I’ll still be here. Waypoint is NEEDED more than ever.

Thanks for everything and keep it up.

oh no. oh fuck. the gamers are coming

real talk tho if i could just shit talk our corporate overlords for a hot minute it’s a bad look to strip away waypoint’s identity A) right after 160k was raised for a charity under the banner and B) there are so many reactionary voices in games and games adjacent spaces that look for any and all reasons why a place like Waypoint shouldn’t exist, it’s hard for me to imagine that an event like this doesn’t become weaponized to some degree by those people.

Will today’s Waypoint podcast come from the same feed?

what does this mean for editorial autonomy? what’s to stop vice head office from imposing a fuckin pewdiepie op ed on everyone or whatever

nothing says ‘we care about you’ like stripping away all individuality after a charity stream… thanks vice

I guess this is a forum question but will articles still be posted automatically to the forums still? Since it’s an entirely different site and all.

What I’d suggest for this is to get in touch with a moderator to request this.

We don’t have an open Discord link on the forum to minimise the potential for harassment to come into the Discord through that link.

(P.S. Forums aren’t changing at all either, though!)

The Waypoint mod team stated at the top that we wanted folks to be mindful of Rule 10, but that is not to say you can’t criticise this. Rule 10 is principally about ensuring folks are mindful about baseless speculation, it isn’t about avoiding criticism of individual or corporate decisions.

Yes – this post went up after it went to Waypoint - VICE & posted automatically.

Waypoint is great and I hope the strong editorial voice and good news judgement are able to stick through the change. I have a few predictions that have nothing to do with staffing or the lives of staff.

  • Vice closing verticals and centralizing its content will make navigating the site a lot more like The Ringer (tags, categories but nothing is siloed)

  • Vice will try to emulate the success of Waypoint Radio by giving other standalone sites who have been folded into Vice their own podcasts

cool. vice can eat my shit

edit: to elaborate, it feels like a lot of people here try to dance around the fact (out of politeness or otherwise) that it’s a company with rotten foundations, unscrupulous management and a tendency to try and sweep their issues with PR bullshit rather than address them. it’s hard to be optimistic about this.

I have to echo the sentiment that this is at best an extremely weird corporate move after having just had a very successful charity stream with Waypoint. I also am totally confident about the team doing whatever’s necessary to maintain what we have, but this is yet another incompetent intrusion by the corporate Vice arm.

Yikes, that name is like actively courting harassment.

Is this Death Stranding?

I’ll wait on the pod before I drop any complex thoughts, but I will echo others in noting the timing on this is horrible considering what Waypoint literally just did with Save Point.

Games media is so volatile
But I came to Waypoint after discovering match 3 and following Patrick from kotaku to here, so even if this doesn’t work out I’m prepared to follow y’all wherever you end up. Waypoint does good work

In all seriousness, this is my greatest worry. While I don’t think that the waypoint crew (or new staff and freelancers for that matter) have a compromised voice, this situation is why it’s so important for all of us to support independent games criticism. There are a lot of great smaller zines and blogs out there doing really great work without corporate interests hanging over them like the Sword of Damocles.

If y’all have a couple bucks to spare, consider subscribing to Heterotopias, Bullet Points Monthy, or any of the other great places people are writing about games!

I’m kind of confused, because before it was Waypoint it was Vice Gaming, of Vice Gaming’s New Podcast fame, and then it became Waypoint, and now it’s Vice Gaming again for inscrutable corporate vertical website integration reasons, but, like… it’s not like Waypoint was just acquired in a hostile takeover? Waypoint was always a Vice website, operating out of the Vice offices?

Like, I get that people are concerned about the health of the Waypoint Fam and stuff, but aside from the dumb old/new branding it doesn’t seem like that big of a change
