Waypoint Weeklies: The Distant Sound of Beeping

the little grunts people and enemies make in Breath of the Wild have a pretty impressive amount of personality per second

Edit: the arrow headshot sound is also a great example of the “cool slapstick” vibe of the game’s combat

I’m also submitting the generic Source Engine “bullet hitting a metallic surface” sound effect because it’s clearly ripped from another library. I hear that shit all over DTV action movies and it always reminds of that dinky USP pistol you get in the first hour of HL2.

Loud Axe Grinding Sound under the cut

This goes off about uuuuuh, 6 times in the space of a minute-ish (if you go into Inner Release at 50 meter) when you’re doing the rotation for FFXIV’s Warrior at around level 70? It’s the noise that makes me feel like I’m doing my job right.

I’ve spent a couple days thinking about which Overwatch hero has the most satisfying sounds, and I think it may be Brigitte. The dull thud of her whip shot canceling another ultimate is so good, especially because Brig is one of those characters that tilts the FUCK out of OW’s most toxic players

The sound of dread

Also the current Apex event has a real annoying sound effect bug.

Ohh, low HP beeps are almost universally the most aggressive sound effects. Memorable.

Speaking of Gears, the active reload sound is a good one for me.

Kind of a repost since the dark souls parry sound was already posted, but the bloodborne visceral attack chime is great sound design. I actually didn’t realize until pulling up this video that there’s a second chime during the punch. it really does signal very well to the player, “hey you did the thing”

in contrast I feel like some of the sound design in Sekiro is much more subtle, maybe just a reflection of that games’ combat being more about many smaller reactions and attrition.

another one that comes to mind is all the little menu and interface sounds from Baldur’s Gate
it’s hard to describe but something about those soft clicks and thuds left an impression on me

For me, it’s gotta be the HEV suit noises.

I’ve been playing a lot of FFXIV lately and they do a good job of making attacks blend together and feel good with all the clangs and swooshy swoosh effects.

Also for sound effects I can pretty much just say all the sounds in Metal Gear Solid games, like everything; menu sounds, environmental effects like doors and ID scanners, to the clicks and clacks of its tech and physical sounds like punches and snake’s dive impact in MGSV.
Masterclass in satisfying noises imo.

And oh yes, as many have pointed out, From’s souls series have great sound effects, particularly the death knell communicating effectively dread and defeat, contrasted with the satisfying victory sound.

Sure, it is technically more a voice than sound but dang if :08 doesn’t hit different
