There are so many games we've yet to finish from 2017, but in a few days, 2018 will be here. Though we've spent much of this week taking stock of the year that was, now's a chance to think about what we'll be playing and talking about in the months ahead. Austin, Danielle, Rob, and myself looked through the calendar and came up with four games we'll be hot taking in 2018. (Yes, we're aware one of the games we discussed, Psychonauts 2, has already been delayed out of 2018. Oops.)
For all the criticism that Microsoft (rightfully) took for its lack of exclusives this year, I’m actually pretty excited Xbox’s 2018. We should see the release of Crackdown 3 and Sea of Thieves, and we’re due for Halo 6 and Forza Horizon 4 as well. It’s not exactly the largest selection, but all those games are very much my jam.
I’m looking forward to several games but I can’t wait for Baba Is You! It’s a puzzle game where you edit the logic of a game, the RULES of the level, to overcome obstacles.
I’m excited about Last of Us 2, but I’m also afraid that it could be Naughty Dog’s first “bad” game and take some of the shine off the original.
Any of y’all heard of Dusk? It’s a Quake-inspired game where you run fast and shoot at low poly villains. It’s going into early access in 2018 instead of doing episodic releases, and so far it’s extremely fun.
You know I think I saw DUSK at Quakecon earlier this year and thought it looked pretty cool.
Ended up playing a lot more of At Sundown and thought it was a lot of fun and I can’t wait for it to come out. Does a good job of finding it’s in unique niche game play for local competitive shooter http://store.steampowered.com/app/419700/AT_SUNDOWN/
Game I’m most looking forward to playing that I already own: CrossCode (as mentioned over in this other thread). I’m so in for Sci-Fi Zelda Ys that I don’t want to even launch it until it’s out of early access and has an ending, so it’s just sitting in my Steam library, tempting me. “Early 2018” can’t come soon enough.
Game that I can’t believe has a release date, and it’s just a month away: Iconoclasts. Sandberg’s earlier Noitu Love 2 is a terrific little game, and I’m thrilled to see that same 2D action craft applied to a larger project.
The more I think about it, the more I realize I’m mostly just excited about catching up on this year’s games. I still need to check out Wolfenstein 2, Observer, Night in the Woods, Tacoma, Yakuza 0, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, Doki Doki Literature Club, Butterfly Soup, Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Nioh, Assassin’s Creed: Origins and Divinity Original Sin 2, and I have big chunks still to play of Nier: Automata and Prey.
So, I’m actually grateful that there isn’t a ton that I’m hype for in 2018.
I (try to) make a big ol list of games I’m hyped for in the coming year every year, so I’ll post that when I’m done with it.
To pluck a few games that I know won’t make the list, but I’m still hyped for…
Away: Journey to the Unexpected
This game is so SLICK LOOKING. A first person action game based on anime and old FPS’s? Seems like a game with a ton of potential… and it’s coming to Switch!
Boyfriend Dungeon
A dungeon crawler… that is also a dating sim where you can date a cat? Yeah, that’s something I’ll check out eventually.
Code Vein
It’s anime Dark Souls and I’m fascinated to see how the gameplay systems will work with that formula.
Donut County
Whatever this is, I’m in.
Yakuza 6
Still going to use Yakuza 0 as my entry to the series, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be excited that these games are being localized.
