I keep meaning to get back to Doremi. I’ve started it several times but always get distracted before getting past about episode 3 or 4.
I even ended up buying the Umakoshi artbook with his Doremi and Precure work.
Currently I’m on my regular chilled out re-watch of Hidamari Sketch. The first series is so strange compared to the others, there’s way more Shaft references (mostly Pani Poni Dash) and absurdist background comedy moments compared to how I think of the show as a whole.
Slam Dunk is the one true basketball anime. Kuroko’s basket is fffffiiiiiiiiiine. At times it feels like a sailor moon crystal situation even though the stories are different.
Prince of Tennis was awesome when I was 8. I have no idea how that show holds up. The volleyball anime was decent but entirely unmemorable to me. I’m old.
Touch has one of the best themes songs in the history of anime (which is saying a lot).
I always default to Ping Pong now whenever somebody asks me about sports anime. Taishou Yakyuu Musume was also fun but I dunno where that would be available these days.
Okay this is the other one I heard about! I kindof looked for it too but couldn’t find anything… it’s worth it? I heard the premise and honestly have just been craving any anime with non-sexualized female leads.
Yuasa has directed horny stuff (see Kickheart) but Ping Pong is not one of them. It’s all about a bunch of confused teenage boys trying to work through severe emotional issues through ping pong. It’s also one of the best anime I’ve ever seen.
Ping Pong the Animation is not horny at all and from an animation / technical standpoint is one of the most beautiful things ive ever seen. as well as telling a super emotionally resonant story. Seriously though if you’re an animation nerd at all it’s worth watching just for that.
I’m halfway through Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo which has been really good so far. It’s a retelling of The Count of Monte Cristo but set in a sci-fi future that looks like it was designed by french nobles and the Count is a blue vampire scheming his way to destroying the powerful and influential families that wronged him. It has a great style where everybody’s clothes are made up of very flashy, detailed patterns and most of the materials (including their hair) don’t move with the character which gives things a weird “scrolling” look when they move.
I was worried about Zenitsu being another Mineta archetype considering how he’s introduced, but within a couple episodes he develops a lot more depth than Horrible Grape Child has ever demonstrated.
Been watching Vinland Saga. It’s pretty good. The people with plot armor fight like a dynasty warriors game but eh??? that comes with the territory. It may get to be a bit transphobic in a minute though.
So what is happening is a character who is supposedly a prince has been wearing a helmet and now they are taking it off as a big reveal and the character is a bit androgynous. The series is being bit coy although the historical record, for what it’s worth, does have them listed as a prince.
Until they got introduced, I thought that character was going to be like General Armstrong from fullmetal. I wasn’t aware of the history, except for Leif Erickson, so I left the door open to the possibility. But yea, women don’t have any agency so far.
I’ve finally started watching Legend of Galactic Heroes after hearing about it so much on the podcast. I’m surprised how quickly it’s pulled me in, despite its age.
Aside from waiting for new shows to start now that the fall season has started, I have been keeping up with Crunchyoll’s Re:Zero rewatch and all of my expectations have been blown away. I have wanted to watch the show for a long time now and I’m glad that I finally am.
Awesome to hear that more people are watching this, really great that it’s available online now.
If the length or animation style is too much for those that have looked in to watching LoGH, there’s a much more modern show that aired last year called Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These that will go in to a trilogy of movies. Definitely a different show but it has a lot of what makes the original so good.
Temuera Morrison understands one very important thing about Boba Fett: less is more. Not a lot of spin on the ball. Not even a lot of malice. Just ice.
How has Visions been holding up? I have been debating jumping back on Disney+ for literally just Visions but, outside of this thread, I haven’t heard ANYTHING about it.
