What does your username signify?

I picked it because I always thought Trypio from beyblade sounded cool and it was scorpion which was also cool. But mostly I picked it because someone had already taken Dranzer.

ā€œBootsā€ was given to me by some guys I played ice hockey with back in 2000. I grew up playing goalie in rollerhockey during the summers with my bro and our friends, and when we’d play hockey outdoors in the winters (I’m from Minnesota), I’d remain in boots while they skated.

As we played with various groups that rented ice time in smaller arenas, one of them came up with the nickname and it stuck. I’ve been going by it ever since.

33 is my hockey jersey number, chosen because it was the year my late grandmother was born.

I’m part of a local ARG. The game centers on secret identities and metaphysics, so I figure it’s appropriate for my in-game name to be Immaterial.

ā€œWrong handleā€ is a real term from the only sport I play. At one point I accidentally entered my email as the username for a TTRPG-related site, and I thought wronghandle was a funny way to riff on my mistake while connecting two very different kinds of games in my life.

My Steam account was originally Lancenobleviolet, an off-screen NPC in an actual-play podcast. To my horror, that character was later revealed to be the secret identity of a more prominent NPC. Or, as I translated this anecdote for a friend: nerd nerd nerd nerd, accidentally a damn vampire online.

The Wake is a novel by Paul Kingsnorth which takes place in the wake of the Norman invasion of England. The entire novel is written in a hybrid language of old and modern English. It’s one of my favourite books. Lately I’ve just been choosing usernames out of the glossary in the back.

The story of ā€œcellar doorā€ is an interesting one.

I love this question because I have the clearest memory of this moment.

7th grade (so like 2006), English class, talking with my buddy Johnny. Trying to figure out a name for my very first Xbox Live account. We were pretty big fans of Tenacious D so Wonder Boy came up pretty quickly. Then I just had to figure out how to make it unique so I could actually use it. ā€œonlyā€ seemed like a good adjective since i would be ā€œthe only wonder boy.ā€ So it was originally TheOnlyWonderBoy, eventually dropped the ā€œtheā€ to make it cleaner and then transitioned to full lower case. Never looked back.

Mine is a computer game reference that is (like me) probably twice as old as anyone here.

Mine’s a Lightning Bolt song I like a lot but I like the implications it comes with. Am I a master of creating fantastical myths? Am I a master of the 1997 Bungie tactics game, Myth? (No, no)

Mine is ā€œDanger with a Jā€ = Danjer, because it sounded really cool to me when I was in middle school. Now I just stick with it because it’s fun to hear people call you danger when playing games online.

I’m really bad at making up names (my PSN ID is my old Runescape name, please Sony let us change it) and I’d rather people know who I am than have a goofy name.

Really bad waffles.

ā€œBadā€ waffles? How? How do waffles bad?

My username is a reference to a really amazing album by Miles Davis. It’s been my username for more years than I’d like to admit.

I used to go by Bigg Nife everywhere, which is from a Homestar Runner Strong Bad Email where Strong Bad suggests band names (the most famous of these being Limozeen, of course): https://youtu.be/gruB98DWR3I

Over time, since no one gets the reference anymore and I instead get a lot of ā€œBIGG NIFE? Hahaha that’s weirdā€ I’ve since shortened it to Bigg (sometimes Biggs, in honor of the Star Wars character) which I’m happy with since it’s simple and easy to remember.

Nothing! But I’ve had the name since 2004 when WoW launched so now its significance is that it’s my name.

My first full D&D campaign that I played in, I played Khaldor do-Romr, a goliath. Then some horrible things ended up happening, and he gained the honorific of The Last Goliath! Also I’m an enormous boy irl anyway, so it fits pretty nicely.

I go by HedgeAugur on some other sites! Mainly tumblr and BattleNet. Hedge referring to hedge witches, as in a practitioner of magic with few formal ties to a prior school of training

Hamamelis comes from the genus of one of my favorite trees, Virginia Witch Hazel. I’ve spent a vast majority of my life in the state of Virginia, I like witchy and Appalachian design motifs, and I was born in November which is when that tree flowers. In all, pretty fitting.

My last name is Mattucci so ā€œToochā€ became my nickname since highschool. And I liked it A LOT. I don’t even know why. It was like an easy shortcut. If you knew me as ā€œToochā€ you knew me.

And if I can get a little real, ever since I started having like Gender Thoughts that I’m still not 100% sure what to do with, that name has been even MORE meaningful to me. A couple weeks ago someone asked me for my pronouns and I was just like ā€œI don’t care, but tbh just use ā€˜Tooch’ instead of pronouns wherever applicableā€ and that was the first time in a minute I could say something concerning my gender identity without ANY uncertainty.

Because that’s just me. I don’t like labels, they work for plenty of people, just not me. I feel boxed. I feel expectations come with labels. Preconceptions. False assumptions. If someone doesn’t know what I’m about, then they don’t know me, so it’s none of their business. You want to know me and what I’m about? Come say ā€œhiā€ and we’ll go from there.

So yeah, I like my name a lot haha.
