What is your personal media junk food?

Holy cow, thank you!!!

@ricotta oh man, same here! all of those films make me want to write a ā€˜non-outbreak’ zombie story, where instead of bringing about the end of the world the zombie plague just gets contained and everyone tries to think how to deal with the containment zone. I don’t know if that’s relevant to your comment I just think it would make for an interesting story. I wish I was any good at writing fiction.

@redsilversnake I’m curious, how do you draw the line? I’m trying to get back into anime after a few years of abstinence, and I used to be super into trashy manga adaptations, but now I’m not sure if adult, socially conscious ā€˜woke’ me is going to be uncomfortable watching them

Shitty thrillers. I will consume any and all shitty thrillers, be they horror-, romantic-, psychological-, erotic-, or otherwise. My most recent terrible indulgence was the whole first season of Netflix original series Gypsy, starring Naomi Watts as a therapist who lives a double life, spying on and interfering with her patients’ personal lives for no apparent reason, and Billy Crudup as her oblivious husband. GOD that is a bad show, but GOD did I love it. I just love garbage!!!

The Dresden Files

I tend to have pretty specific things that’ll make me outright drop a show, honestly. I do remember not even finishing the first ep of one show because of its insistent homophobia, but also Noragami for being super judgmental of people who’ve committed suicide, or the more recent 18if for suggesting a character who tried to quit her job because of the stress it inflicted on her is actually fated to keep doing that job.
More broadly, though, anime does still tend to have issues that are easily spotted by anyone who’s socially conscious. Fanservice is still widespread, treatment of female characters can be very inconsistent, sexual assault is considered funny in a lot of circles, it’s rare for shows to treat any queer characters well, etc. and so forth.
Deal breakers vary from person to person, but one site I think is pretty good for determining if a show may or may not be for you in that regard is Anime Feminist, which only has full reviews for debut episodes, but will always cover them from an intersectional feminist perspective. Their positive reviews don’t always pan out (they gave a recommendation for Welcome to the Ballroom this season, but word is that it’s not turning out that great), but personally speaking, I think it’s a good resource overall, and I can’t think of another site like it.

The Tales of… series were my junk food gaming series but I just couldn’t get into Berseria. 🤷

As of this last episode I think Game of Thrones is officially on my junk food list. This season has really been pushing it with time and distance being at the mercy of plot, but this episode really sent characterization and intelligence packing. And yet I don’t think I can quit, I’m in it for the long haul at this point. I have to know how this all end up, even if I’ve got a sinking feeling about it.

When I was going through some heavy depression, I frequented a site that streamed To Catch a Predator nonstop. I would sink many hours to it and seeing creepos get caught on camera would offer me a ā€œat least I’m not himā€ sort of comfort.

Nowadays I don’t enjoy it anymore. Just feels weird and wrong watching it.

Oo! I just thought of another prime resource of quality media junk food: Terrible Webcomics! I’m currently on a big MegaTokyo binge because I am trash and belong in a dumpster. What are your favourite terrible webcomics?

The media that I regularly partake in that most qualifies as ā€˜Junk Food’ would be food youtube. I have gone down some deep rabbit holes of watching people eat/review/react to foods from different cultures, large amounts of food, fast food, Military food, and all sorts of food. I don’t know why I like watching these, they have very little substance but I can’t stop! My favorites are Kinoshita Yuka, steve1989MREinfo, and of course the master that is TheReportOfTheWeek.

No problem! All I really did was get the first little bit of the song synced up to a part of the trailer, so I was pleasantly surprised at how well the title reveal at the end lined up. Honestly, that later part fell into place on its own better than I could have manually lined it up

Big budget hyper-linear ā€œcinematicā€ first person shooter campaigns. Your Call of Dutys, your Battlefields, your countless knockoffs. Every criticism they get is valid but like, there’s almost something comforting about how linear and scripted they are, for me? The mindset I get into when I play them is almost like I’m an actor- need to hit my next mark, do this dialogue scene, etc. etc.

…sometimes I’ll even move my view up and down to ā€œnodā€ after an NPC has said something to me. I’m a dork leave me alone…

I mean, I ā€œCinematizeā€ my gaming experience pretty much all the time. I’ll always try to align my camera in a way that is either synchronous with my character’s actions or that creates visually interesting framing.

That confirms it- this was destined to be

Not even going to try and defend this but uh. Definitely the new Netflix Death Note film.

See, the reason I said I wouldn’t defend it is because I enjoyed it UNironically. But I have been known to do that too! I don’t typically hate watch a film though. I see no point in it. If SOMETHING hasn’t grabbed me within like thirty minutes I’m out.
