Bow and arrow for every situation. something really satisfying about compensating for drop, and having an arrow sticking out of your kill. Also reuseable ammo is a big win.
Even though light and quick is clearly more my style I often end up using big axes and hammers because swords are so boring. I donāt know, Iām hipster trash and, urgh, like, swords are so mainstream, you know.
Depending on the game swinging around a big hammer can be a lot of fun (or, maybe there are one-handed hammers and things, in which case, PERFECT), but itās about 50/50, sometimes Iām not good enough at the game to competently use a strong, slow weapon, and end up with a sword anyway.
I love spears, but theyāre less common.
Bows are good, sometimes, but sometimes I hate them? Very much depends on the game.
Iāve started playing kingdoms of amalur and hey, more games should give you chakram, in my opinions. They frickin rule, Iām having a great time.
Bows and shortsword/dagger. rogue supremacy.
A good semi-auto rifle is my favorite weapon of choice, and the M1 is my personal GOAT.
I also love railguns or anything that requires a small charge up time.
Melee, Iād rather use my fists or some kind of fist weapons.
I like big hammers, clubs and maces. Theyāe often inaccurate and clumsy to use but incredibly satisfying when the hit lands.
Though lately Iāve been getting a magic itch, so Iāve been going for whatever witch/wizard option the game offers.
I like to use weapons that donāt require much aiming. Shotguns? Check. Explosives? Check. Giant Swords? Check. A magick bow that locks on to enemies? Check. A plasma gun that shoots a 2ft wide projectile? Check. Any sort of dialogue system that allows me to talk my way out of conflict? Check.
Mostly that sort of thing.
Mines! Proximity, trip wire, timed. Iāll take 'em all. If mines are unavailable, large quantities of grenades will sometimes do. (I was banned from using mines in Timesplitters)
For low tech RPG settings I gravitate to bow and axe. Good solid peasant weapons. Maybe you want to fight some dudes or maybe just hunt your dinner and chop up some wood to cook it with.
I feel like across all games shotguns are usually a pretty safe bet that very satisfying ch-chunk of the pump action goes a long way.
there is also a part of me that is always drawn to sniper rifles although I donāt have the cool head or aim to back it up most of the time. my ultimate is sniper rifles in a tactics game like X-com or Valkyria Chronicles. thos guys always become my favourites. I once plugged an alien through a doorway from a balcony on the other side of the room in X-com and it was truly my finest moment.
I like how a few of you already brought up the satisfying sound of certain weapons. That definitely counts!
Me, I dig the sound of reloading a bolt action rifle. Especially if itās also animated properly.
It depends on the game, but generally, in a shooter I like to go for a shotgun. I donāt necessarily enjoy having to get up in peopleās faces to be effective but shotguns pack a punch that I feel like I never really get with other weapons. Sniper rifles are close, but theyāre often super unwieldy. Sometimes pistols also fill this niche, and if the shotgun is bad Iāll try and make the pistol work. And automatic guns are always just. Boring. Really really boring.
For melee I change between liking single handed-swords or sabres, preferably with no shield, and straight up unarmed melee. Two-handed swords often feel really clunky to me, and I donāt really like the micromanagement of trying to block with a shield.
Also if itās a game where a bow or crossbow is an option I will def go with that.
As a general rule, if the game at any point says to you āthis probably isnāt the best ideaā Iāll kick arse with it. Iām extremely good at taking advantage of the small psychological effects that come from using lesser-known weapons. Greatshields and Whips in particular, in Dark Souls terms. Though anything with an element of baiting and/or manipulation I can make work.
If weāre talking real life though, Iāve practice with a staff to an extent, do in a pinch Iād rather be with something like that.
PING!
Reloading never sounded so satisfying.
Hopefully this isnāt too off base, but I love me some magic.
Particularly magic that doesnāt seem obviously useful. This extends to abilities or however the game interprets utility.
If itās an FPS? Gimme them grenades and mines of all kinds. Fighting games? You best believe my char has as many variations of fireball as possible.
In my current run of Dark Souls 2 Iām really coming to love all the utility magic and hexes. Yearn takes the bite out of a LOT of stuff I found a real pain without it. Looking forward to getting Tranquil Walk of Peace and abusing the hell out of that.
Melee: Axes. Love me some fucking axes. In DS3 Iām running the Battle Axe infused with Dark, and the Demonās Great Axe. I also main WAR in FFXIV.
Any sort of gun game, Iāll usually use a sniper rifle against A.I., because theyāre bots and just run at me in a straight line. In games where I have to play against actual people, Iāll get an SMG or something and just get in close enough to spray and pray, because my ability to actually predict an opponent shrinks as they get further away from me. I use the Micro Uzi or the UMP in PLUNKBAT games, with a side of whatever long range rifle I can find. Iāve gotten the M24 out of the crate nearly every time Iāve found it in a game, but itās pretty much 100% to keep someone else from getting it, or to give it to whoever Iām duo-ing with b/c all my friends are snipers. All I want is the tommy gun, but Iām cursed.
For melee, I prefer spears if the game does them right (needs to be fast and stabby) otherwise light and quick one-handed weapons.
For shooters, if itās single-player I go sniper rifle. On multiplayer I donāt have good quick aiming so I use anything with large spread: shotguns, SMGs, and assault rifles.
Came here to post this. Rogue Life
Donāt be shocked by the tone of my voice. But I canāt choose just one weapon, as my weapon of choice.
Now, I could go with this. Or I could go with that. I could go with this. Or I could go with that. I could go with this. Or I could go with that.
Or you could throw one of us.
Games are jobs.
Jobs have clearly defined goals: like hitting a nail in. What hits a nail in the best?
You got it, a hammer.
Whatās the best tool for a job? Nailed it. Hammer.
Whatās the best weapon in Monster Hunter. Kablammo, itās the Hammer.
In fantasy RPGs Iāll usually take a one hander and a shield. If the game wants to get specific on which kind of one handed weapon, Iāll almost always go with a hammer, but honestly Iām not picky. I like the shift that occurred in RPGs from very specific weapon types (I only use hammers) to more general ones (I use all one-handed class weapons) so Iām usually switching between hammers, maces, axes, swords etc. pretty often in games these days.
In shooters I use pretty much everything, but what I prefer changes from game to game. Call of Duty? Give me a shotgun on an SMG thatāll just spit bullets. Battlefield Iāll take an assault rifle or a carbine. Counter Strike iām pretty much a jack-of-all-trades, but Iāll air toward snipers and assault rifles. I canāt say Iāve been precious about a specific type of gun. Like I donāt always use an AK-47 if itās in a game.
